Reception Summer 2 2017

Here is an overview of some of the things your child will be learning this half term in the different areas of learning. The topics we choose are heavily led by the children’s interests and usually encompass several areas of learning. For this reason, the topics will change to reflect the direction the children wish to take their learning.

 

This half term we are going to be following the children’s interest in Dinosaurs and Space. We will also be working on transition to Year 1 across this half term so that they feel confident about who their new teachers is going to be and where their classroom will be next year.

Understanding of the world/ Speaking & listening:

As part of our topic this half term we will be learning about a range of science concepts including magnets and electricity. The children will identify materials which are attracted to magnets and also learn about objects around the home which use electricity to work.

 

Literacy:

By this point of the year, we have covered all of the sounds and tricky words expected by the end of Reception. We will now be spending our time revising these and also practicing skills needed for the move to Year 1. Children will learn about what makes a sentence and how they are demarcated using capital letters and full stops. They will also make sure they know how to form capital letters along with the lowercase letters they already know. Children will revise letter names to go with the letter sounds and any children who are not forming lowercase letters correctly will be a particular focus this half term to ensure they are not getting into bad habits. The children will now be extending their writing beyond 2 sentences and try to include features of narrative ready for writing their own stories. They will also be exploring longer polysyllabic words and trying to include these regularly in their work.

 

Numeracy:

By this point in the year we have covered all of our topics related to number and shape space and measure. Over the next half term we will be revising these skills to make sure everyone is secure with each concept and also looking at skills they will need ready for their transition to Year 1. We will apply their skills within problem solving situations and also begin to look at some of the higher order skills such as counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s in preparation for multiplication later in school. Estimation is another skill we will revisit. We will learn how we can use this to get a good guess about what our answers might be to number problems and spot mistakes when we make them.
