Transition between KS1 (Infants) and KS2 (Juniors)

The large majority of children who join us in Year 3 come from Westroyd Infant School.  We have a strong working relationship with Westroyd and have developed a transition programme aimed to ensure that all children can feel confident and secure when they arrive in September to join our Year 3 classes.

During the final half term when the children are in Year 2 there are several things that we organise to help the children become more familiar with our school and staff.

  • We run 4 after school clubs such as art, football, athletics and ball skills for all the Year 2 children to join along with our Year 3 children.  This allows the children to become familiar with our site and meet different members of staff. The clubs run for 6 weeks from3.15pm to 4.15pm. The Westroyd staff bring the children to our school and parents then collect their children from Springbank.
  • Our Year 3 teachers and teaching assistants make several visits to Westroyd.  They work with the children in their lessons.  This is an opportunity for our staff to develop an understanding of the needs of the different children and for the children and staff to get to know each other before September.
  • The Year 2 staff from Westroyd and Year 3 staff from Springbank meet to pass relevant information on about all the children.
  • In July, the Year 2 children come to Springbank for a full day and become Year 3 children for the day.  During the day they take part in a treasure hunt around school and a group of new Year 6 children spend some time with each class so the children have the chance to ask them lots of questions about our school.

Additional transition work

In partnership with the Pudsey Cluster, Family Support workers and Westroyd staff identify a small group of children who may need some extra support with transition.  This can be for a variety of reasons including confidence levels.  This small group of children have a weekly session around moving schools, the first three are held at Westroyd and the final three are held at Springbank.  This was really successful last year and increased the confidence levels of the children involved.

In the Spring term we write to parents/carers and invited them to come and have a look around the school.  This is open to all parents.  Many parents are already familiar with our school as they have older siblings with us however for those parents/carers whose first child is joining us it is an opportunity to meet us and get a feel for our school.

For the parents and carers of children who will be joining us in the September, we hold a New Parents Evening in July.  Prior to the meeting all new parents will receive our school prospectus.  At this meeting, parents meet the Year 3 staff and Leadership team.  We share information about our school and parents can ask questions.  There is an opportunity to have a look round the school, in particular the Year 3 classrooms.  At the end of the evening, parents are able to come and discuss any individual concerns/worries they may have with staff.

Our main aim is too ensure that all children feel confident, secure and happy when they join us.  If you have any questions regarding your child joining us in Year 3, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0113 2558719.
