Learning Challenge: Could you survive a night in the woods?
All the Year 1 children are so excited to start this topic! We will be spending this half term looking at the great outdoors, and how to survive in the wild. Team work and outdoor learning will play a key role throughout. Across the term we will look at the lives of exciting explorers, learn about hot and cold areas of the world and spend lots of time exploring our own school grounds with our very own ‘Explorer Bear’. We will use maps to navigate our routes, pack rucksacks with key survival equipment and enjoy lots of adventures. We will finish the topic with a photography unit, making our own natural art and then taking stunning photos of our work to show off. We also have a very exciting day planned with a visiting den-building expert where the children will get to make their own dens! I wonder if they will keep us dry?
This half term the children will be creating their own ‘Survival Stew’ in order to learn about plural spellings such as when to use ‘s’ and when to use ‘es’. For 2 weeks we will be reading the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. After exploring and retelling the story with some short writing opportunities, the children will make changes to the story and rewrite it in their own words. Finally, we will be writing instructions all about how to prepare for an explorer’s expedition. Our focus will be on forming complete sentences with the correct punctuation. The children will also be expected to re-read their sentences and to check their work against a visual checklist. They will also be writing sentences ending in exclamation marks and question marks. We will continue using simple conjunctions to extend sentences, this time focussing on ‘but’.
Three guided reading sessions take place each week. The children spend two weeks on their group book and are given a range of learning opportunities in each guided reading session. They read the book with a teacher, read the book with a buddy in the reading corner, carry out an independent task with the book, such as writing their own speech bubbles for the characters and they carry out a reading comprehension task. These activities really help the children to read the book with more fluency and to become more confident with the story content. Please continue to read frequently with your child at home...just 5 minutes every couple of nights will really helped with your child's fluency.
In Phonics, the children will continue to recap all the new phonemes they have learnt throughout Phase 5 leading up to the Phonics Screening Test in June. Our focus will be accurately reading real and 'alien' words which are nonsense words made up from sounds the children have learnt e.g. gleeb. We will continue to focus on accurately spelling all of the tricky words we have learnt so far. Spelling rockets are being sent home every Friday. Please continue to support your child with this at home.
This half term the children will firstly be learning about the numbers 40-100. They will practise making these numbers using different resources, drawing them, identifying how many ‘tens’ and ‘ones’ each number has, ordering the numbers and identifying one more/less than a given number. We are working really hard on counting forwards and backwards from 0-100, focusing particularly on bridging ten (e.g. 52, 51, 50… what comes next?) The second half of the term will be spent practising and applying addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children will be applying the methods they have learnt in lots of different contexts to practise their problem solving and reasoning skills.
In Science, as well as learning all about the outdoors through our challenge topic, Year 1 will be learning about everyday materials. We will learn about the different materials objects can be made from, and how the properties of these materials affect what they are used for. We will then conduct experiments to find out which material would be best for Explorer Bear to make a shelter from, as he sets off on his adventures.
In RE we will be starting our unit on caring for others. We will learn about caring for other people and the world around us. It will help develop skills of questioning, explanation and awareness of what ‘caring’ looks like for different pupils and people of different faith backgrounds. It will also develop skills in reflection and communication and encourage self-esteem and empathy.
This half term in PSHE we will be making sure Year 1 know how to look after themselves and their emotional wellbeing. We will learn about different types of feelings and how to manage these, and look at how change or loss can feel. Ensuring we are equipped with strategies to help us recognise and deal with a variety of emotions will enable us to lead happy lives.
This half term, the children will continue to develop their basic game playing skills, concentration and ball skills. We will play simple games focusing on defending, tackling and dribbling and have an opportunity to play as a team. We will continue to work on the vital skills, strategies and tactics to outwit the opposition.
This half term the children will be learning the song ‘Round and Round’, a Bossa Nova Latin style. They will listen to and appraise - Latin music, film music and a mash-up of Dance and Jazz music. The children will continue to learn about pulse, rhythm, tempo and dynamics through a range of games, singing, playing instruments, improvising and performing their own arrangements.
This half term we will be looking at different presentation devices. We will be learning how to collect information, including photos, videos and sound, and then adding information using the iPad apps Doodle Buddy and Puppet Pals. We will also be talking about the different ways that information can be shown, especially on the internet.
