Learning Challenge: What was life like in Britain 10000 ago?
This half term we will be focusing on Britain’s history over 10000 years ago. We will be beginning with a trip to Nell Bank where the children will be immersed in the stone age history through many activities such as hunting, house building and learning about what and how they ate. We will begin our topic in the Mesolithic period in 8000 BC and finish in the Iron Age in 25 AD. The children will learn how Britain has been shaped over the years by hunters, farmers and warriors. We will be learning how Britain was once part of mainland Europe and that hunter gatherers used to roam the land as seasons changed. Children will share their findings in fact files and through art work. As the topic develops, they will investigate the changes to how humans lived and began to farm the land, creating small communities. The children will be using map skills to locate countries in mainland Europe and Britain. They will also take part in drama and role play to recreate life in the past. Children will then see how living in one place rather than being a nomadic society allowed humans to develop skills, such as smelting metals, which then revolutionised the way they lived. The key to this topic is the children’s understanding of ‘why life changed in Britain’ and ‘how that affected the people of the time’. We will also be making links between British history and events in Egypt at the same time to compare the two periods in history. To showcase our learning, we will be leading an assembly to show all of the activities and facts that we have done as a part of this topic.
Reading this half term will be planned based on the book ‘Cliffhanger’ by Jaqueline Wilson. During comprehension and guided reading lessons we will be focusing on inferring meaning and finding evidence from the text to support our answers. This adventurous and exciting book will further the children’s enthusiasm for reading and give great opportunities for the children to empathise with the characters and infer information from what they read. The children will learn to interpret information, inferring character’s feelings, thoughts and motives. The children will be taught these skills in comprehension and will consolidate them through a range of fun activities in guided reading. We expect the children to be reading regularly at home, as this boosts progress alongside the teaching we do at school.
In writing lessons, we will be using our topic of the Stone Age as a stimulus to write creatively. We will write in the style of diaries, myths and persuasive holiday brochures. We will revise our knowledge of sentence structure that we have learnt in Autumn 2 and build on this using conjunctions and varying sentence structure. The children will learn to extend their sentences with adverbial phrases and learn how to vary the structure of their sentences using a variety of openers and conjunctions. The children will continue to use adventurous vocabulary and will proof read their writing to check for mistakes and edit them independently. The grammar for this term will revise topics we have already covered such as word class, inverted commas and contractions. We will also learn how to effectively use question and exclamation marks. In spelling, the children will learn spelling patterns for words that have the prefix sub- and tele-, /c/ spelt ch, words with the sound /sh/ spelt ch and words with the short /i/ sound spelt with y. They will revise spelling patterns learnt in Autumn 2, as well as focusing on words they often make mistakes with in their writing.
This half term in maths we will be continuing to focus on multiplication and division. The children we will use their knowledge of multiplication facts to apply to new multiplication problems, by examining patterns and relationships in number, for example, using our knowledge of the 4x tables to work out answers to the 40x tables. We will use our multiplication skills to help support our understanding of division, both practically and in formal written methods. We will be using a range of practical and visual representations to aid in our understanding of multiplication and division and when ready, the children will progress onto formal written methods. As always, children will be learning their times tables, which really does help them in class and we would appreciate your continued support by practicing them at home. This half term, we will be focusing on our 8 times tables, but continued practice of 2s, 4s, 5s and 10s at home will be especially useful too.
This half term the children will be learning about rocks and soils in science lessons. The children will study the properties of different rocks and sort them based on their looks, permeability and durability. The children will also learn about how soil is formed from the weathering and erosion of rocks which results in different types of soils. We will also learn about the rock cycle and how sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks are formed. Children will make observations of these rocks and group them to apply their learning of different types of rocks. We will carry out fair testing of soil samples from the local area and discover how soil is formed through careful observations. The children will research how fossils are formed and explain this through diagrams.
Art this half term will be taught through our learning challenge, looking at cave paintings and how to showcase our knowledge of Palaeolithic life through recreating them. We will use pastels and chalks and blending techniques to create effective pieces of cave art.
In DT this term we will be focusing on a textile topic. Children will explore and develop basic joining and sewing techniques skills. They will explore materials and select ones that are best for their design. The children will design through sketching and making prototypes before deciding on a final design and making it from suitable materials.
This half term we will continue to explore the concept of leadership and the important leaders for Christians, Muslims and Jews. Pupils will learn about the specific characteristics of specific leaders, why they are inspirational and how they taught key elements of the faith through stories. Pupils will also have the opportunity to study a modern-day leader, analysing the impact they have had on society. Towards the end of the half term the children will begin to explore how beliefs are expressed through arts. The children will be exploring how religious beliefs can be expressed through music, visual art, drama and dance. They will have the chance to discuss why and how people use arts to express their beliefs and will use this knowledge to create their own artistic expressions.
This half-term in PE we will be focusing on the fundamental movement skills of balance and coordination, looking at ball skills. We will be spending time developing our ability to balance while moving in different ways, ensuring that our movements are controlled and fluid. We will also be working on our ability to hold a ball securely whilst moving in different ways, and will look at how to pass and receive a ball in a controlled, safe way. As well as these fundamental movement skills we will be working on developing our cognitive ability, by planning ahead, using quick fire decision making skills and thinking about evaluating our own work in PE sessions.
This half-term in PSHE we will be focusing on bullying and how to keep safe. The children discuss what bullying is and how it can make people feel. They will also explore the different types of bullying and how to respond to incidents of bullying. They will learn about and develop strategies to deal with bullying and what to do if they witness bullying.
In Music this half-term, the children will be learning about singing posture and will be furthering an awareness of pitch change. They will be learning a variety of songs to help to develop this concept. They will also be learning about dynamics when singing and will be listening to recorded music with changing dynamics. They will be exploring music from a range of genres and learning about the history of some of this music, as well as some well-known musical artists.
This half-term in French, the children will be revising the vocabulary they learnt in the Autumn term. They will also be learning colours and playing games and learning songs to reinforce this new vocabulary. They will be writing sentences using colours and other adjectives to describe a character. As well as using adjectives, they will learn how to include pronouns and conjunctions in their sentences. They will be doing a range of speaking and listening activities throughout the half-term to build on their confidence in speaking French.
This half term in computing we will be looking at Online Safety and especially at the dangers young people face when they are playing games online. To show what we have learned both Year 3 classes will be making films about Online Safety on the iPad app iMovie.
