Here is an overview of what your child will be learning this half term in the different subject areas.  The Learning Challenge focus usually encompasses several curriculum areas.   If you have any questions about the learning this half term, please contact us as we are more than happy to discuss any queries with you.

Learning Challenge:  Do we live in the best city ever?

Our learning challenge this half term is based on the question ‘Do we live in the best city ever?’ We will start by looking at the development of the city from a small settlement, to the Leeds that the children know today! As part of the topic the children will learn about some of the important people and places in Leeds’ history through an exploration of the city centre on a local geography walk. As part of the geography focus of this topic, the children will learn about countries and continents and will be using grid references to map and locate places. When studying the history of Leeds, the children will learn about chronology and time lines and will have a major focus on the key events of the industrial revolution using sources to investigate the ways this shaped the city. This will be supported by a visit to a local mill. We are already looking forward to sharing all of this exciting learning with you at our exhibition later this term.

 

English

Children will deepen their understanding of the learning challenge by producing a range of linked writing. They will revisit their story writing skills, beginning by using description to keep their reader interested and in suspense, writing spooky stories about being trapped in a mill. As part of the unit we will be focusing on developing the children’s oral literacy skills by rehearsing a story and allowing the children to adapt it to create their own writing. The children will also have a focus on editing and redrafting their writing through working with their learning partner. Following a visit to Sunnybank mills, the children will use their history knowledge to write a diary entry from the point of view of a mill worker. In addition to this, the children will explore spelling rules and patterns in regular spelling lessons. Handwriting is, as always, a strong focus for us at Springbank and children are given short and frequent sessions to practice different letters and joins. We are very excited about our class book this half term which is “The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me” by Roald Dahl and the children will also have lots of reading opportunities throughout the week, including independent reading sessions in small groups, whole class reading comprehension lessons, individual reading to an adult and whole class quiet reading where children can lose themselves in a book. We endeavour to ensure all children at Springbank have a natural love for reading so please continue to support your child with this at home.

 

Maths

After a long summer break, we will begin the year recapping and consolidating the children’s knowledge surrounding place value, focusing on the value of a number and developing a sense of worth of number. Once this unit has been covered we will extend the children’s formal methods for addition and subtraction. Children will use a range of practical resources to play and develop their understanding before moving onto the column method to add and subtract money including decimals. To deepen their learning, children will always be given opportunities to explore what they have learnt in different contexts such as puzzles or word problems where they need to think outside the box and think logically and systematically. The children will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of Roman numerals and ideas around where place value developed in history. Children will explore larger numbers and decimals and sort them using their knowledge of place value. Practising times tables and number bonds will be ongoing and children will enjoy lots of fun and frequent activities to ensure they know these important maths facts, such as songs, games in class, computer-based games on the iPad and ‘good old chanting!’ Please continue to support your child with this at home as it is a fundamental part of mathematics and it equips children with the mental skills necessary to solve a wide range of calculations and problems.

 

Science

This half term the science question is ‘Is there sound in space?’ This exciting topic looks at the science of sound. The children will learn about different sources of sound, volume and pitch. They will look at sound waves and will develop an understanding of how these impact their hearing. The children will experience how the vibrations that cause sound waves, grow fainter with more distance and how this affects volume. There will be lots of opportunity for child-led investigation, experimenting and hands on learning as part of this topic.

 

RE

This half term in RE, the children will be considering the question “How are important events remembered in ceremonies?” This unit will explore festivals of light from Judaism, Sikhism, Hinduism, Paganism and Ancient Civilisations. It will consider how some festivals use light as a representation of hope, joy, remembrance and reflection. As part of this topic the children will draw comparisons between religions and will be given the opportunity to share their own beliefs and feelings.

 

History and Geography 

This will be covered through the learning challenge and will have a local focus.

 

Art

The art this half term will also be linked to the learning challenge and the children will have the opportunity to work in two different media. They will develop their line and shade skills when creating artwork about Leeds architecture. Following a visit to Leeds in week 2, the children will also create their own section of Tapestry that reflects Leeds.

 

PE

This half term the children will be beginning to develop some new skills using our Real PE approaches. This will be centred on developing agility, balance and coordination in the children. They will have a focus on developing skills and sportsmanship. The children will also have a weekly swimming lesson where they will work on water confidence and safety, through a range of collaborative games.

 

PSHE

This half term the children will be focusing on mental health and wellbeing in PSHE. They will develop a growing understanding of the nature of different types of feelings and some strategies for how to manage and understand them.

 

Music

In Music this half-term, the children will be learning about the musical concepts rhythm, pulse and metre. They will learn to perform rhythms, to feel and mark the pulse and to distinguish between rhythm and pulse. They will also learn to feel the metre of 4 beats through a range of songs and activities. They will learn about the genre of gospel music during Black History week.

 

French

This half-term in French, the children will revise what they learnt last year through a range of activities, videos and songs. They will learn vocabulary for parts of the face and the body and will use ipads to create raps using this new vocabulary. They will also learn the French alphabet and how to spell out a range of words.

 

Computing

This half term in Computing we will be looking at binary numbers and how computers use them to store information. As well as linking to Maths, this also allows children to understand how computers compress and retain large amounts of information. We will also be looking at some of the other fundamentals of computing - algorithms, encryption and code breaking.
