Learning Challenge: Could you run a restaurant?

This half term we start by looking at the question ‘Can you run your own restaurant?’ which covers several subject areas including Design Technology (cooking and nutrition), art, English and science. This topic allows the children to work towards running their own restaurant just before we break up in October (save the date- 5O’s night is on Tuesday 16th October and 5F’s on Wednesday 17th October). Children will cover questions such as “What makes a healthy meal?” looking at different food groups, a balanced meal and why it is important to stay healthy. Other questions include “What will be on my menu?” where children will be learning about consumer research and looking at developing their menu ideas through looking at popular dishes. This will also help incorporate maths into the topic as children learn to create tally charts and bar graphs and interpret this information accordingly. Children will also be writing their own television adverts, with an emphasis on speaking and listening skills. They will then have chance to film these using the iPad skills they learnt from Mr Bradshaw last year. Children will have the chance to develop their knowledge of healthy eating, profit and loss, cooking, and team working skills. The learning challenge is very much child centred with children’s baseline questions forming the basis of the topic.

English

To start the year, children will be writing their own autobiographies to introduce themselves to their new teachers.

We will start by writing our own autobiography, focusing on one chapter of our lives. We will then be looking into adverts where the children will look at the specific features of both written and spoken adverts, eventually producing their own television advert linked to the restaurant theme. The children will develop their analytical skills as well as being able to write and perform their own compositions from memory. This will be centred on the use of iPads to film their adverts, allowing children to understand how important technology and computing are in today’s modern world across a range of subjects. In spelling we will be focusing on the national curriculum spelling list and recapping spelling rules visited previously in Year 4. Our grammar and punctuation work will focus on the use of modal and imperative verbs and the use of the past tense.

Our class guided reading novel this half term is Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl. The book is a fantastic insight into the early years of the much loved children’s author, with exciting and humorous tales throughout. The book will be studied through reading lessons and we will also be building on our inference and retrieval skills in reading comprehension lessons.

Maths

We will begin this year by introducing children to the Year 5 objectives to do with place value and problem solving using the four operations. Children will have chance to build on their learning from previous years as they work towards Year 5 objectives. Firstly, we will be recapping our learning from Year 4 and reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers up to 1,000,000. We will look at column addition using numbers with more than four digits before using this knowledge to use rounding to check accuracy of calculations. This is a skill that will be implemented across all four operations. During addition and subtraction, there will be a focus on children mentally adding and subtracting numbers to increase their confidence and ability to calculate fluently in their heads. When we move on to multiplication and division, children will use the bus stop division method with increasingly large numbers and long multiplication to move in to multiplying four and five digit numbers by two digit numbers, as well as rounding to check accuracy. Children will have opportunities in all lessons to not only practice their skills but to apply their learning to problems, as well as using their reasoning skills. Times table practice will take place every morning, with children being challenged on a range of their times tables.   Children need to continue using Times Tables Rockstars as often as possible at home to keep improving on this!  We will also be using our mornings to keep practising our arithmetic and calculation skills which will get increasingly challenging as the year goes on.

Science

The focus for this term will be ‘Can you drink dirty water?’ We will be looking at changing state. We will be using lots of experiments to investigate how we can separate different materials in solutions and mixtures. We will look at melting and freezing, evaporating and condensing and solids, liquids and gasses. During this topic we will discuss fair testing and design our own fair experiment to test separation and saturation of solutions when a solid is dissolved into a liquid. We will also look at the filtration of liquids, both using man made products and the natural filtration of spring water. We will then move on to look at reversible and irreversible changes, linking to the use of materials in everyday life.

Art and Design Technology

Our Art and Design Technology this half term will be linked to our restaurant learning challenge.

RE

This half term we will be focusing on places of pilgrimage and looking at why people go on special journeys. This will include children looking at places which are special to them as well as looking at Jewish and Christian places of pilgrimage.

PE

Our indoor PE will be looking at dance and learning different styles of dance, including building on our skills from India day last year by learning Banghra dancing We will look at different moves and creating our own routines. We will be learning outdoor adventure skills in our outdoor sessions including looking at the skills needed for orienteering. This unit will focus heavily on learning to work together as a team to solve complicated problems.

PSHE

We will work hard to improve our typing skills and learn how to use all our fingers and thumbs to make our typing quicker. We will also be learning the basic functions of spreadsheets, including using simple formulas and using this as part of our topic lessons!

Music

In Music this half-term, the children will be working on the concepts of phrase and tempo. They will be comparing the phrases of a known song. They will learn that phrases in the same song can be of different lengths. They will also learn that tempo (speed) is important to the character of the song. They will take part in a range of games and activities and will be learning new songs to consolidate these musical concepts. The children will also learn about the genre of hip-hop and its origins. They will learn some beat-boxing techniques.
