At Farsley Springbank, we believe that involvement in the arts plays a vital role in developing the whole child. Allowing children to express themselves creatively and to make their own choices improves their motivation, concentration and confidence. We aim to provide an art education which engages, inspires and challenges children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Our curriculum ensures that children make progress as they move through school, and build upon their skills each year, allowing them to think critically and develop a deeper understanding of art.
Throughout school, children will be given opportunities to develop their techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture using a range of media including watercolour, charcoal, pencil, pastels, paint and clay. Lessons will be linked with their learning challenge where possible to ensure children are engaged and motivated by the topic. All children have their own quality sketch book which travels with them as they move up through the school. These are used to practice their skills and experiment with different techniques as well as final art pieces. Being able to look back and reflect on their work in their sketch books enables children to recognise their own progress and make choices about their next steps.
Each year group studies a great artist, architect or designer in history, learning about the life of that artist and understanding the historical and cultural development of their art forms. They are given opportunities to create work in the style of that artist and to take inspiration to create their own art pieces using a medium of their choice.
