Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic visit exploring St Aidan’s Nature Reserve, taking full advantage of the outdoors to support their wellbeing and bring our learning to life. Alongside spotting a wonderful variety of local wildlife, the children represented our school brilliantly with exemplary behaviour throughout the walk. It was especially rewarding to hear them make meaningful connections to our curriculum drivers completely unprompted—confidently pointing out moments where they showed determination, pushed themselves as sensible risk-takers and collaborated effectively as a team. We are incredibly proud of their maturity and enthusiasm!

Despite the steep sections and changeable weather, the children showed outstanding determination, resilience and teamwork throughout the walk. As they made their way up the mountain, the weather began to clear so that they were eventually rewarded with a view from the top. Every child rose to the challenge, encouraging one another and demonstrating a fantastic attitude from start to finish. We were incredibly proud of their perseverance and behaviour, which reflected our school values perfectly. Reaching the summit was a huge achievement and one that the children will remember for years to come.

To start with, the children completed a 50-metre swim indoors followed by a quick change before heading out and beginning the next stage. After an 800-metre cycle, the children had to leave the bikes behind and finish strong with a 300-metre run, crossing the finish line and being rewarded with a medal and goody bag. We were so impressed with the resilience and determination of all the children that took part in this event. It looks like we may have some budding triathletes on our hands! Year 5 also got to meet both Brownlee brothers…can you spot them in the photo! Great job Year 5!

This was their second peak walk as they completed Pen-y-Ghent at the beginning of Year 6. We had to cancel this walk twice earlier in the week due to the awful weather but today the sun was shining so 6B set off at 8.15am this morning. Yet again, the children have been amazing and loved the challenge and opportunity to climb one of the famous three peaks. Well done 6B.

For the last couple of months Year 4 have been planting hundreds of seeds, bulbs and tubers, all of the edible kind. They have sown tomatoes, carrots, celery, beetroot, lettuce, chard, cucumbers, onions, garlic, potatoes, peas, beans, spinach, chillis, pak choi and kholrabi! They have now started to pick out seedlings, pot plants on into bigger pots and plant some of the hardier vegetable plants out into the garden. Already we are seeing pods form on some of the bean and pea plants! Along the way they are learning about how growing their own fruit and vegetables can contribute to healthy, sustainable living such as eating seasonally, cutting down on air miles, not using pesticides and using less plastic. The exciting outcome of all this growing will be right at the end of our school year when Year 4 will plan, harvest and cook a delicious meal from all their school grown produce.

They were fascinated to learn how seaside holidays first became popular—discovering steam train travel and historic bathing machines! The highlight of the day was dressing up in traditional Victorian outfits, giving our young historians a real, hands-on feel for holidays of the past.

Whilst they were there, they took part in some role play and acted out how the Romans invaded Yorkshire. The children then had a carousel of activities. The first activity had the children examine different, real Roman artefacts which had been found in Leeds. They had to wear gloves and be proper archaeologists! They then had a go at designing their own Roman coin. The children were able to see lots of different coins for inspiration. Finally, the children looked at different pots, some were intact however some were broken. They had to use their prediction skills to guess what they would have been used for and what they might have looked like back then. To finish the trip, the children had time to explore the vaults of the Discovery Centre. They saw an array of different animals, bones and remnants of the past!

The singers joined hundreds of other school children and performed on the Rhino’s rugby pitch, to the crowds, before the game between Rhinos and Catalan Dragons. Many of the children then stayed with their families to watch the match (Rhinos won!).

During the morning, the children took part in a sustainability quiz, learning more about the importance of reducing waste and reusing clothing. They also helped to sort donated children’s clothes and, as a special treat, each pupil was able to choose an item to take home. The children were, once again, excellent ambassadors for our school. They showed great enthusiasm, teamwork and respect throughout the visit and the volunteers praised their positive attitudes and willingness to help. A huge well done to all of our School Council members for representing our school so brilliantly!

On Monday and Tuesday, 5W and 5MJ took part in an immersive, hands-on experience that brought their learning to life. Dressed in traditional tunics, the children fully embraced their roles as young Vikings. Throughout the day, they developed battle skills, worked together to defend their settlement, and even helped to stop a raid! The experience didn’t stop there, pupils also explored everyday Viking life by baking bread over an open fire and crafting their own pottery. This engaging trip provided a fantastic opportunity for pupils to deepen their understanding of the Viking era through practical activities, teamwork, and creativity. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, curiosity, and resilience from all involved. A truly brilliant experience for both classes!

The trip was a fantastic way to bring their history learning to life and provided a hands-on experience that the children will never forget!

When we got there, the children were eager to explore the museum’s galleries, discovering incredible artefacts, interactive displays and historical treasures. They were particularly fascinated by the real Mummy, Nesyamun, the ancient relics and the stories they told about people from the past. The highlight of the trip was the engaging Ancient Egypt workshop, where the children learned about the mummification process. They were thrilled to take part in a hands-on activity, where they re-enacted the steps of mummification, wrapping a ‘body’ and carefully preparing it for the afterlife.

Through this immersive experience, they deepened their understanding of Egyptian beliefs and traditions. The children had an amazing time and were so eager to tell each other about the new facts they had learned, it was a lovely way to consolidate their learning over this past term!

The children have been practising for weeks, with lots of children even giving up their own play and lunch times to practise. The children travelled down to Armley, full of excitement and a few nerves. They took part in group skips to warm up, followed by phase 1. In this part, the children who had their individual skips took to the stage to perform. After this, the children had another group skip together, followed by the partner skips. Finally, the group skips (keep the pot boiling and run, jump out) had their turn. The children waited in anticipation as they read out the results. They all did SO well with lots of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. We were the overall winners, which is an incredible achievement and the first time Year 4 has ever qualified from Springbank! The Leeds City Final is on the 9th June so they need to continue their practising until then! What a fabulous achievement, every single person involved should be so proud. Well done Year 4!

As part of our topic on evolution and inheritance, Year 6 visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster. We spent our morning exploring all the animal enclosures and were lucky to see lots of the animals at their most active. The children watched the polar bears having a roam and a swim, saw the tigers patrolling their territory and saw the wallabies and their babies up close in their enclosure. We then spent time with one of the park's education specialists - Alex - who showed us how some of the park's animals had evolved over time by using real fur, teeth and skulls of the residents! The children used the knowledge they gained to make up their own evolved animal, eventually playing a game of survival of the fittest! We even had time to run off some steam in the jungle adventure playground before heading back to school. It was a fantastic day and a great way to consolidate our learning around this top attraction.
