Year 4 had a fantastic trip to the Royal Armouries as part of their history topic. Whilst there, the children took part in a Greek Mythology workshop, where they stepped right into the shoes of legendary heroes and gods to bring ancient stories to life through drama and role-play. They were then put through their paces in a Spartan soldier training session. They learned how ancient warriors formed shields, followed commands and worked as a team to defend their city-state. Before heading back to school, the children were treated to a live Celt combat demonstration and spent time exploring the gallery exhibits, getting a chance to look at real weapons and armour from throughout history.

This week Year 2, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 children were lucky enough to visit the gallery at Sunnybank Mills to see the latest exhibition called ‘Soft light.’ They took some time to look at the different pieces of artwork. They looked at the shadow puppet theatre in the centre of the gallery and had the opportunity to use some of the shadow puppets that were there and watched how the shadows could be moved and used to tell stories. They then had the opportunity to create shadow puppets of their own using black paper and scissors. Each child was then able to take their puppet back to the puppet show and see their very own creation come to life in the gallery. The children thoroughly enjoyed this experience and had a great time guessing what creature or object each of their friends had created by their shadow that they could see. It was wonderful to see the children looking at and talking about the different types of art from photography to paintings and sculpture.

It has been so inspiring for the children and staff to hear about different careers that some of our talented parents do! Thank you so much to all the parents who gave up their time to come and see us, we really do appreciate it.

The children learnt about how libraries work and what sorts of books they might find in the children's section. They enjoyed story time with Keith and displayed super listening skills, joining in well with the interactive parts of the story. The children had a chance to have a look at the books which they treated so respectfully, turning pages carefully and putting them back where they found them. The behaviour of the children was excellent and we are very proud of how they represented Springbank on their very first school trip.

The children were able to see the orchestra in action, and also help to create some rhythms for the orchestra to play, using whatever they had for breakfast...granola, chocolate porridge and pain au chocolat created great rhythms that they could clap and play to! The orchestra members introduced each of their instruments to the children, learning the names of all the instruments and hearing them play. It was a fun concert, for both the audience and the children in the orchestra.

Our children have an amazing arts and culture offer all year round.

They have specialist music teaching from the brilliant Mrs Love every week, which includes a singing session and a music lesson. All KS2 children learn how to play the keyboard through their weekly music lessons with Mrs Love as well as opportunities to attend some fantastic music events such as Young Voices, which is always a firm favourite, as well as having the opportunities to attend a singing club and other music-based clubs such as drumming and music making.

All children access a high-quality art curriculum, which sometimes includes a visiting artist or art-based trip. Arts after school clubs are on offer throughout the year for those children who want to pursue their interests/talents in art.

We ensure that all children have opportunities to visit the theatre several times over their primary years – the theatre can be a magical place for children, sparking their imagination in so many ways. There are also other cultural trips to places such as Leeds Museum and the Royal Armouries for the children to enjoy.

Our Arts and Culture week is in addition to all the above but it is always such an amazing week where the children get to immerse themselves in music, art, drama and visit arts/culture-based venues. It is so important that children have wider curriculum opportunities which allow them to be creative and curious. You can read more about what they have done this week in Latest News.

Alongside spotting a wonderful variety of local wildlife, the children represented our school brilliantly with exemplary behaviour throughout the walk. It was especially rewarding to hear them make meaningful connections to our curriculum drivers completely unprompted—confidently pointing out moments where they showed determination, pushed themselves as sensible risk-takers and collaborated effectively as a team. We are incredibly proud of their maturity and enthusiasm!

Year 1 went on a short, local walk around Farsley to conduct some geography fieldwork observations. Earlier in the week, we looked at maps dating back to 1957 when a particular area of Farsley (some of the Springbanks and New Parks) were still fields and allotments. We compared the map to a more modern one, which now shows houses and roads. The children were fascinated by the changes and were so excited to go out and use their map. We learnt that since the 1960’s, Farsley has lots more houses, roads and people but fewer fields and green spaces. We also spoke about the differences in the types of shops and businesses that would’ve been on Farsley Town Street during that time.

The children really enjoyed learning firsthand about the everyday responsibilities of a councillor and how local government operates in our community. Following the classroom session, he also stopped by to meet with our newly elected School Council for their very first meeting of the year. They had a productive discussion comparing local government to the school council, focusing on the positive changes our own student representatives can make here at school. It was a lovely, informative visit that perfectly complemented the children's classroom learning and gave them a great, practical introduction to the democratic process!

The children loved watching a variety of planes take off and land while enjoying a hot chocolate - it was the perfect way to bring their classroom learning to life! Afterwards, the adventure continued with a visit to the Chevin, where the children enjoyed a woodland walk. We noticed signs of autumn - the trees were turning lovely shades of yellow, orange and red and the children loved seeing squirrels searching for food. We had a brilliant morning and came back to school full of stories about the planes they saw and the lovely walk we had in the forest.

There were some lovely conversations going on and lots of questions being asked. At the end, the children performed their poem ‘Now we are six’ by AA Milne. It was a lovely way for the children to get first-hand accounts and experiences about life before they and their parents were born. Thank you to all the grandparents who attended; we know some grandparents travelled to be with us today and we really appreciate the effort everyone made. The children loved having you all in school!

On the way, the children got the opportunity to see the River Aire, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and also enjoyed crossing the train line at Kirkstall Forge train station. We discussed where they could catch the train to if they hopped on there, as well as the differences between a river and a canal. The walk also provided the children with the chance to practice their road safety skills. The children absolutely loved spending their time in the outdoors and they are very excited for their next walk!

All the children had a brilliant time and were an absolute credit to themselves and the school!

They decorated their 'cave' with cave paintings, wove a basket to gather their berries and created a fire to cook their food and warm themselves and then created their own dens in the afternoon using natural resources. They are looking forward to finding out more about the Stone Age.

They were great walkers showing really good determination on both the ascent and descent and we are really proud of them all.

Katerina talked to the children about what life was like in Ancient Greece and explained to them how we know so much about the civilisation. Katerina led the children on an archaeological journey filled with various activities to immerse them in Ancient Greek culture. To start the day, the children were shown a range of artefacts which they were asked to investigate to try and work out what they were! They were then shown the Ancient Greek alphabet and set out decoding a set of words all about Greece before competing in an Ancient Greek game. In the afternoon, the children took part in an art activity before spending some time trying on and learning about Ancient Greek armour and warfare. The children can't wait to find out more over the course of the Autumn term!

The weather conditions were very warm and the children were full of excitement as we approached the stadium. Although they were competing today, this event in fact started a few weeks prior! Lots of children had been giving up some of their lunch time with Miss Robertson to practise making sure they felt confident on the big day. There were 9 other schools competing this year which meant more competition, however the children all had a positive attitude and just knew that they just had to try their best. Year 4 and 6 competed in one track and field event each and Year 2 did a carrousel of activities using skills such as balancing, throwing and jumping. They were all amazing and we finished in 3rd place! We are so proud of all the children who took part in the event. Well done Springbank!

These activities gave the children more information about plants, which is our topic for the summer term.

To start with, the children completed a 50-metre swim indoors followed by a quick change before heading out and beginning the next stage. After an 800-metre cycle, the children had to leave the bikes behind and finish strong with a 300-metre run, crossing the finish line and being rewarded with a medal and goody bag. We were so impressed with the resilience and determination of all the children that took part in this event. It looks like we may have some budding triathletes on our hands! Year 5 also got to meet both Brownlee brothers…can you spot them in the photo! Great job Year 5!

They have sown tomatoes, carrots, celery, beetroot, lettuce, chard, cucumbers, onions, garlic, potatoes, peas, beans, spinach, chillis, pak choi and kholrabi! They have now started to pick out seedlings, pot plants on into bigger pots and plant some of the hardier vegetable plants out into the garden. Already we are seeing pods form on some of the bean and pea plants! Along the way they are learning about how growing their own fruit and vegetables can contribute to healthy, sustainable living such as eating seasonally, cutting down on air miles, not using pesticides and using less plastic. The exciting outcome of all this growing will be right at the end of our school year when Year 4 will plan, harvest and cook a delicious meal from all their school grown produce.

The walk began with a long uphill climb, where the children showed fantastic determination and resilience to reach the top. Along the way, they encouraged one another and enjoyed spending time outdoors with their friends. One child said, “Although it was steep and hard work, it was great because you got to walk with your friends and have a good work out!” Another shared, “I really liked the walk because it was really challenging but really fun!” We were incredibly proud of the children’s positive attitudes and perseverance throughout the day.

Reception children performed a wonderful assembly based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar and we could not be prouder of them. The children wore handmade caterpillar headbands, sang a song retelling the story, shared beautiful artwork they had created in class and used Makaton to help bring the story to life. It was wonderful to see so many parents and family members there to cheer on and support the children. The smiles and excitement in the room made the assembly truly special. We are so happy and incredibly proud of every child for their confidence, creativity and enthusiasm.

Year 4 had an exciting trip to Leeds Discovery Centre to find out more about the Romans. Whilst they were there, they took part in some role play and acted out how the Romans invaded Yorkshire. The children then had a carousel of activities. The first activity had the children examine different, real Roman artefacts which had been found in Leeds. They had to wear gloves and be proper archaeologists! They then had a go at designing their own Roman coin. The children were able to see lots of different coins for inspiration. Finally, the children looked at different pots, some were intact however some were broken. They had to use their prediction skills to guess what they would have been used for and what they might have looked like back then. To finish the trip, the children had time to explore the vaults of the Discovery Centre. They saw an array of different animals, bones and remnants of the past!
