This half term in science, Year 1 have been learning all about different materials and their properties. The children were asked to find the best material to make a shelter for their class mascots, Explorer Bear and Billy Bob the turtle. Each group was given their materials and set off to design the optimum shelter to withstand the wind. The children worked scientifically, making predictions about which material they thought would work best and why, using the properties of materials to justify their answers. When it came to testing them, the children brought their shelters to the 'wind testing station' where they were blown with a hair dryer. We counted how long each shelter could withstand the wind before being blown over. Thanks to the children's expert den making skills, nearly all the shelters were windproof! Well done Year 1 for your super scientific investigations.
