Here is an overview the things your child will be learning this half term across the different areas of learning. The topics we choose are heavily led by the children’s interests and usually encompass several areas of learning. For this reason, the topics will change to reflect the direction the children wish to take their learning. This half term we are going to be answering the question ‘Why would you choose to live in the sea?’

Understanding of the world:
During this term we will be exploring the festival of Chinese New Year. This is a lovely way to introduce the children to different aspects of the Chinese culture and again extend our ability to make comparisons. During the festival period we will read stories from the Chinese culture, look at the different foods from the region and dip into the beliefs surrounding the Chinese zodiac.
As the term progresses we will be having a special visitor who will be bringing us some real live hens to meet and greet and, before she goes, she will be leaving us some eggs of our very own! They will take 21 days to incubate within our own in-class incubator and if we’re lucky, some of them will hatch before our very eyes. This topic is a great opportunity to see growth and change first hand, learn how to care for living things and of course, do some very cute pictures of chicks.
This half term we will be reviewing our knowledge of the phase 2 phonic sounds and tricky words as well as beginning to learn our phase 3 sounds including digraphs and trigraphs (two or more letters which make one sound such as ‘sh’ ‘th’ ‘igh’). We will also begin to learn our phase 3 tricky words. Practicing these phase 3 sounds at home is really important, especially if your child is finding it hard to recognise, remember or form their letters. The children will continue to increase their bank of tricky words and begin to write using capital letters and full stops to show the beginning and end of their sentences. At this stage we will be looking for children to leave gaps (finger spaces) between each word so that their writing can be read back easily by both themselves and others. This is essential for them to reach their early learning goal in this area.
This term we will continue to deepen our understanding of number. During the Autumn term we worked hard to ensure all children had a solid concept of the numbers 1-5. This meant ensuring that they could recognise and write the numerals, break each number down into smaller numbers (i.e. 3 can be made up of three ones, a two and a one, or a three and a zero), find one more and less and start adding and subtracting these numbers to and from each other. This learning will be continued this term with the numbers 6-10.
In addition to number we will also be covering multiple aspects from the shape, space and measure area of learning including money and measurement. Whilst covering measurement we will look at size, mass and capacity. To do this we will begin to compare and order objects by these measures and build up vocabulary so that children are able to compare objects in their play e.g. “Your shopping bag is heavier than mine.”
Finally, a large proportion of our time will still be spent developing our fine and gross motor skills. We will be developing these skills using a range of strategies including messy play, flipper flappers, dough disco and movement play. This is essential for all areas of the curriculum with the ultimate aim of every child confidently holding a pencil will a tripod grip and feeling confident whilst forming all of their letters.
