Reception Summer 1 2019

Here is an overview of some of the things your child will be learning this half term in the different areas of learning.  The topics we choose are heavily led by the children’s interests and usually encompass several areas of learning. For this reason, the topics will change to reflect the direction the children wish to take their learning.  This half term we are going to be following the children’s interest in monsters, fairy-tales and super heroes.

If you have any questions about the learning this half term, please contact us as we are more than happy to discuss any queries with you.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Bennett, Miss Charles and Miss Smith

Understanding of the world/ Speaking & listening:

As part of our topic this half term we will be learning about a range of countries and how they are different from where we live. We will look at pollution in our own environment and around the world. We will also think about how we can help to keep our immediate and wider environments clean and healthy. In addition to this, we will use our science and design skills to investigate materials looking at which ones are waterproof.

Literacy:

We have now learnt all of the phase 3 phonic sounds. Children will spend the rest of the year learning to use these more extensively within their writing. They will also continue to learn the phase 4 tricky words and practise reading and writing four sound and polysyllabic words from phase 4. We saw some great progress last half term and we are excited to see the children excel during the summer term. In class, the children will be engaged in writing through weekly challenges throughout the classroom environment, they will be encouraged to write in busy books, daily phonics sessions and small group guided writing activities. We are also encouraging the children to write more at length, writing multiple sentences along the same theme. Within our topics on monsters and fairy tales the children will be accessing stories through songs and dances which will allow them to remember the story to enable them to write their own narratives with a beginning middle and end. We will also to continue to use Talk 4 Writing, this half term we will be focusing on instructions.

Numeracy:

This term we will be consolidating our knowledge of numbers to 10 and starting to look at numbers to 20. We will be spending time every day counting up to and back from 20 and will continue to use physical resources to explore skills including addition, subtraction, doubling, halving and sharing. We will also spend time recapping our measuring topics, looking at how we measure length, weight, capacity and time in everyday life. Children will get the opportunity to use these skills to measure plants in the garden, make magic potions and weigh bags of magic beans from Jack and the Beanstalk.
