Here is an overview of some of the things your child will be learning this half term in the different areas of learning. We will begin the half term with our science topic on insects. Within our topics, we will follow the children’s interests and develop learning through their investigation and play. We will also be working on transition to Year 1 across this half term so that they feel confident about who their new teachers are going to be and where their classroom will be next year.
If you have any questions about the learning this half term, please contact us as we are more than happy to discuss any queries with you.

Understanding of the world/ Speaking & listening:
As part of our nature topic this half term we will be learning about a range of mini beasts and insects. We will learn how to identify and sort these animals based on a range of characteristics and also learn about the role they play in our local environment. Our learning will take us not only outside into our nature area where we hope to find, study and draw these creatures but also to other countries when we compare and contrast mini beasts here in the UK and in other countries around the world. This will lead nicely into our geography based topic this half term where we will be learning about maps.
By this point of the year, most children will be confident at reading and writing set one sounds and will be moving onto set two sounds and longer four sound words. The children have learnt a range of red tricky words and are now using them more extensively within their writing. We will now be spending our time revising these and practicing reading and writing skills needed for the move to Year 1. Children will learn about what makes a sentence and how they are demarcated using capital letters and full stops. In our Read Write Inc. journey the children will learn how to form capital letters along with the lowercase letters they already know. We continually review letter formation to ensure children don’t get into bad habits, forming letters incorrectly. The children will now be extending their writing beyond 2 sentences and trying to include features of narrative ready for writing their own stories as well as fact files linked to our bugs topic. They will also be exploring longer polysyllabic words and trying to include these regularly in their work.
By this point in the year we have covered all of our topics realted to number and shape space and measure. Over the next half term we will be revising these skills to make sure everyone is secure with each concept and also looking at skills they will need ready for their transistion to Year 1. The children will deepen their learning of doubling and halving and use this knowledge to understand odd and even numbers. We will apply their skills within problem solving situations and also begin to look at some of the higher order skills such as counting in 2’s 5’s and 10’s in preparation for multiplication later in school. Estimation is another skill we will revisit, learning how sensible guessses can help us solve problems and spot mistakes when we make them.
