Here is an overview of what your child will be learning this half term in the different subject areas.  The Learning Challenge focus usually encompasses several curriculum areas.   If you have any questions about the learning this half term, please contact us as we are more than happy to discuss any queries with you.

Learning Challenge: What was life like in Britain 10,000 years ago?

This half term we will be focusing on Britain’s history over 10,000 years ago.   We will begin our topic in the Paleolithic period and finish in the Iron Age in 25 AD. The children will learn how Britain has been shaped over the years by hunters, farmers and warriors. We will be learning how Britain was once part of mainland Europe and that hunter gatherers used to roam the land as seasons changed. Children will share their findings in fact files and through art work. As the topic develops, they will investigate the changes to how humans lived and began to farm the land, creating small communities. The children will be using map skills to locate countries in mainland Europe and Britain. They will also take part in drama and role play to recreate life in the past. Children will then see how living in one place rather than being a nomadic society allowed humans to develop skills, such as smelting metals, which then revolutionised the way they lived. The key to this topic is the children’s understanding of ‘why life changed in Britain’ and ‘how that affected the people of the time’. 



This half term the children will be basing their writing on the book The Twits by Roald Dahl. We will start our writing unit by writing and receiving letters between Mr and Mrs Twit. They will learn the ingredients for a simple sentence and then build on extending sentences with adjectives, adverbs, connectives and varying sentence openers.  They will learn how to structure their writing through planning their ideas and organising writing into paragraphs. We will then move onto instruction writing, the children will learn to use imperative verbs to write their own prank. To finish off, the children will be writing their own prank chapter using their own creative ideas and what know from the text. The children will learn spelling rules in lessons focussing on words with the ‘dge’ sound at the end of the word, as well as looking at challenge words. Children will use Spelling shed in school and are encouraged to do the same at home, to really concrete their learning and understanding. The grammar for this term will focus on word categories and knowing how to write a sentence with the correct punctuation. We will also focus on words that the children often make mistakes with such as ere/was, their/there and our/are. The children will practise handwriting regularly; focusing on letter formation and joins, following on from their handwriting syllabus in Year 2. This half term’s reading lessons will be based on the class novel, ‘The Twits’. In reading lessons we will be focussing on the skills for retrieval; finding information in the text and then building on this to infer information from what they have read. Children will also have the opportunity to read for enjoyment and choose books from the library. We encourage the children to spend time at home reading; whether it be individual or sharing a book with brothers, sisters and parents.



In maths, the children will recap their knowledge of place value with numbers up to 1000. The children will understand how to read a number in numerals and words and what each digit represents. They will become confident at partitioning a number and identifying the value of a digit; children will show their understanding through representing numbers visually and with apparatus. This will then enable them to order numbers and estimate amounts. Through solid understanding of place value, the children will add and subtract, ones, tens and hundreds from any given number, using mental methods and move on to formal written methods towards the end of the term. Whilst becoming confident with formal methods and mental methods of addition and subtraction the children will apply their skills using reasoning and problem solving. Throughout the half term the children will practise their number bonds and will re-cap their learning of their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. This will lead on to their 3 times tables and related division facts.  In school, we will practise regularly in quick bursts to cement their learning and help quick recall skills. We expect children to readily practise their times tables at home on Times Tables Rockstars to support their learning in school.  



This half term’s science question is ‘Are all rocks the same?’  Using the five different types of scientific enquiry, children will investigate how to group rocks based on their properties. They will learn how rocks are made by researching the rock cycle and have a go at producing their own using sweets! Children will also understand the key components that make up soil. This topic links with our art project for the term, where we take a look at how fossils are made.



This unit focuses on what it is like to be Jewish, exploring beliefs about God and about how ideas of God are expressed in stories, celebration, ritual and action. It will also teach about Moses as a key leader in the Jewish tradition and about the Torah as a sacred text. The children will learn about the great festivals of Pesach and the weekly celebration of Shabbat, illustrating how Jewish people try to live. This unit gives the children opportunities to explore how religious artefacts and texts can be a source for learning and for beliefs.



In PE this half term we will be learning what OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities) is and how to improve our skills in order to tackle activities that might be outdoor and adventurous. The children will work with others to solve problems, describe their work and use different strategies to solve problems, work in a team as a member and a leader and learn differentiate between when a task is competitive and when it is collaborative. The children will spend the second hour of their PE lessons practising the specific skills needed for a successful game of netball.



In Music this half-term, the children will be working on singing development. They will learn to find their singing voice, to listen to and imitate song phrases and also to pitch match the teacher, other individuals and the class as a whole. They will listen to and appraise music. They will also learn about the genre of jazz, including its origins and some famous jazz artists. We will also begin our whole class musical instrument lessons which will take place on a Thursday afternoon.



This half term’s unit is about strengths and challenges and within the PSHE lessons children will be learning how to set personal goals and how to celebrate achievement. They will also learn to deal with put-downs and develop strategies to positively deal with set-backs. This unit links with growth mind-set and will help the children to start Year 3 with a great learning attitude for all aspects of their life. 



In Computing we will be teaching the children about Text and Graphics. The children will learn how to log onto our system and use software to change the way their text looks including manipulating the colour, size and font style. We will also experiment with using graphics both from within the program and also copied from other sources such as the internet. We will look at the basic keyboard features and develop the skills needed to become fluent when typing.  This half term we will also focus on e-safety and the safe use and storage of data both within school and when using online programs.



To really immerse the children in their topic of ‘The Stone Age’, children will take part in making a version of ‘Stone Age Stew’. They will learn about how nomadic people both hunted and gathered their ingredients and they will develop an understanding of how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed. The children will then get to try the stew and compare it to the foods we eat today.
