This week, the children have been continuing in their phonics groups and most children have now moved onto learning Set 3 sounds.
We have been working hard on writing simple, clear sentences with a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces and have been very impressed with how the children are applying what they have learnt in handwriting in their writing and phonics lessons.
As part of our 1960s topic, we looked at maps of Farsley from 1957 all the way up to the presetn days and noted the changes we could see on the maps. We discussed that 70 years ago, Farsley had fewer houses and more fields but that nowadasy farsley has more houses, roads and people. We then went on a short walk around Farsley using our maps and thinking about what it would've been like in the past.
In Computing, we finished our online safety unit by learning about passwords and how they keep our information safe. We talked about how a password is like a key and discussed what makes a good password. Next half-term, the children will begin using their very own passwords to log in to the chromebooks.
In Maths, we continued learning about addition and subtraction, specifically looking at number bonds to and within 10. We looked at how to find number bonds systematically (in a pattern) to make sure we find them all.
Another busy week, filled with learning and fun! Well done Year 1.
This week in Year 1 has been an exciting one! We were very pleased to welcome lots of grandparents to school to support our learning in our topic 'What was life like when grandparents were children?' The children were very keen to ask questions and explore some of the memorabilia that people had brought in. We talked a lot about changes in toys, photographs and life in general.
In Maths, the children moved onto learning about addition and subtraction and explored parts and wholes. We introduced them to the part-whole model and the concept that 2 (or more) parts make the whole.
The children had fun creating their own wacky animals in their science challenge - practising and solidifying their knowledge of animal body parts. We will learn more about animals in autumn 2 and how we can cateogorise them based on their specific body parts e.g. birds all have feathers, wings and a beak.
In PSHE, we learned about what the police do, what they wear and how they keep us safe as part of our PolEd lessons. The children impressed us with how much they already knew.
In Science, the children have been learning about seasonal changes. They have explored the different seasons and considered how to describe the changes that occur throughout the year. The children have been developing their understanding of changes in weather, the environment and the natural world.
Our History learning has focused on the 1960s, with particular emphasis on Neil Armstrong and the historic Apollo 11 mission.
The children have enjoyed learning about the events surrounding the first Moon landing and have developed their understanding of this significant moment in history. They were particularly enthusiastic when applying their learning through imaginative play. In the construction area, the children designed and built their own rocket ships, demonstrating creativity and collaboration.
In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of ordering and comparing. They have been learning to arrange objects and numbers according to size and quantity, identifying the greatest and smallest amounts. Through practical activities, the children have been encouraged to compare quantities and explain their mathematical thinking.
It has been a very positive week, with the children demonstrating enthusiasm and curiosity across all areas of their learning. We look forward to continuing to build on these experiences in the weeks ahead.
It has been another productive week, with the children engaging positively across a range of subjects and developing their knowledge and understanding through a variety of activities.
In Science, we have been learning about our senses and the different parts of the body associated with them. The children have identified that the nose is used for smell, the tongue for taste and the eyes for sight. They have been developing their understanding of how our senses help us to explore and understand the world around us.
In History, we have been exploring life in the 1960s and comparing it with life today. Our focus has been on the development of technology, considering the similarities and differences between the ways people lived in the past and how we live today.
The children particularly enjoyed learning about how people listened to music in the 1960s, including the use of records and cassette tapes. This provided an opportunity to consider how technology has changed over time and how the ways in which we listen to music today differ from those of the past.
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of how to compare numbers. We have focused on the vocabulary more than, less than and equal to, using these terms to describe and compare different numbers and quantities.
In PSHE, we have been discussing the importance of responsibility. The children considered the responsibilities they have at school, at home and within their communities. We explored why being responsible is important and how our actions can affect others.
This week, the children have been continuing practising the routines and expectations of their new Year 1 classrooms alongside their oracy talk guidelines.
In English, we started phonics in our new groups and learnt about adding labels to our independent work around the classroom. We launched our new handwriting scheme 'Letter Village' and the children have been impressing us with their dedication to improving their letter formation.
In Maths, we started to think about place value to 10 and learnt about how to write numbers as words and how to count on and find one more than a number. Writing numbers to 10 as words is a tricky concept as some of them are very tricky to spell, so we will revisit this a lot over the year.
In Science, we started to learn about the human body. We named lots of body parts and drew around people outside in chalk to label them. We also went hunting round the classroom for body part labels to stick on a human outline.
We also started our new topic 'What was life like when grandparents were children' and the children learnt about the concept of the past and chronology. We talked about the question 'who came before me' building upon their learning in Reception and they showed us their family timelines in different ways both inside and outside.
Welcome to year 1!
What a lovely week we've had getting to know all the wonderful children.
We have been really impressed with their resilience, attitudes to learning and their enthusiasm as they navigated their first ever week in Year 1.
We have been talking about our rules for oracy with our discussion guidelines – this week we have been practising how to listen actively.
We have been spending time exploring our classrooms and the outdoor areas, learning our routines and expectations – we have been impressed with how the children have been getting to grips with everything.
