At Farsley Springbank Primary School, our curriculum has been shaped by the voices of our whole community. We consulted governors, parents, staff and children to explore what skills and qualities our learners most need to thrive in an ever-changing world. Together, we identified six key drivers that reflect our shared values and our vision for every child to be Courageous, Kind and Curious.
Through research and reflection, we explored how best to weave these drivers into every aspect of school life. They are not stand-alone ideas but threads that run through all subjects, experiences and relationships – continually taught, modelled and celebrated. Our curriculum is play-based and active, with a focus on the outdoors, giving children daily opportunities to practise and live these skills in real and meaningful ways.
We want our children to grow as independent thinkers and learners – able to make choices, solve problems and take ownership of their learning. Independence is about confidence and self-belief: knowing when to ask for help, when to persevere and how to take the next step on their own. Through structured challenge and freedom to explore, we help our children discover their own strengths and develop a lasting sense of agency.
Determination is the courage to keep going when things feel difficult. We teach our children that effort, resilience and reflection matter more than instant success. By celebrating perseverance and progress, we help them to see that mistakes are part of learning and that with commitment and a positive mindset they can achieve anything.
Curiosity fuels learning. We want our children to be intrigued by the world – to ask questions, wonder why and seek answers. Through rich, hands-on experiences both inside and outside the classroom, we nurture inquisitive minds who are eager to explore, connect ideas and look deeper.
We believe that learning happens when children are brave enough to step beyond what they already know. Risk-taking is about trying new things, learning from setbacks and developing the confidence to face challenges. Our children are encouraged to experiment, reflect and grow – knowing that it is safe to fail and powerful to try again.
Collaboration helps our children to understand the strength of working together. We teach the importance of listening, sharing ideas and valuing every contribution. Through teamwork and shared problem-solving, children learn empathy, compromise and how to achieve more collectively than they could alone.
Respect sits at the heart of our community. It shapes how we treat one another, our environment and ourselves. We want our children to appreciate difference, show kindness and recognise the impact of their words and actions. By modelling respect every day, we build a culture of belonging where everyone feels safe, valued and proud to be part of Farsley Springbank.
Together, these six drivers bring our vision of Courageous, Kind and Curious to life – creating a curriculum that not only teaches knowledge but grows character, curiosity and confidence in every child.
