Maths
This week in maths the children have revisited the names of 3D shapes and we have looked at their properties. Here is a song you might like to watch together at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74JhwbsVXQ8&list=RD74JhwbsVXQ8&start_radio=1
We have also been identifying when 2 sets are equal in number and identifying when a double is shown. We have used objects to make doubles patterns and the children have described what they can see. You could do this at home with toys, sweets or clothes. Put 3 cars out and see if your child can match the amount to make double 3 – can they say what double 3 is for instance?
Understanding the World
In Understanding the World we have been reading the story ‘Once they were Giants’ by Martin Waddell. Here is a link to the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIK2NjSvvDg We have learned that history is the study of the past and that things change over time. We have explored how we change and have used the vocabulary baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult. We have talked about the different things that we can do at different stages of our lives.
Thank you for sending in baby photos of your child. It has been so lovely to look at these together and they have helped us to think about how much the children have changed since they were babies.
Next week in maths we will be using practical contexts to sort objects according to different criteria, such as size, colour and function. Sorting and classifying are important early years’ skills that encourage children to identify similarities and differences. These skills also support problem solving and the development of data analysis. The children will also continue to practise recalling the composition of numbers as doubles. They will begin to practically explore even and odd numbers. This link has videos and games which support the learning of doubles: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zc3dqfr
Next week in Understanding the World, the topic ‘Our Wonderful World’ will explore signs of new life, both animals and plants. This weekend you might notice some signs of new life whilst out on a walk, perhaps tadpoles in a pond or buds on a tree. We will be thinking about special places in our natural world, such as the park, the beach, the woodland and what makes these places beautiful and special.
Thank you for your continued support in hearing your child read at home, practising formation and writing and using the Numbots program. |
