Summer 1 Week 3 8/05/26

Hello!

It was wonderful to share our learning with you during this week’s Reception assembly. Thank you for coming along and supporting the children as they proudly showcased all the hard work they have been doing in class. They were delighted to share their beautiful artwork and fantastic writing with you and we are incredibly proud of all they have achieved.

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of the composition of 5. The children enjoyed using the song “5 Little Kittens” alongside the “fingers up, fingers down” approach to help embed their learning. We have also been exploring how larger numbers can be created from “5 and a bit,” using our knowledge of smaller numbers to support this understanding. The children used the Hungarian dice pattern (similar to the pattern seen on a number 5 dice face) and a range of practical resources to develop their confidence and understanding.

Next week, we will be exploring the composition of 10. The children will investigate how 10 can be made from two parts and will continue developing their ability to subitise using structured arrangements such as double dice frames and 10 frames. We will encourage the children to recognise 10 within the “5 and a bit” structure, as well as using their fingers and the “fingers up, fingers down” approach to represent different ways of making 10.

Understanding the world

This week in Understanding the World, the children have been learning all about plants. We explored what a plant is and learned to name the different parts of a plant. The children enjoyed painting their own flowers and carefully labelling the different parts.

We also spent time identifying plants in our environment and discussing where we might find them. The children were introduced to the meaning of germination and learned about what seeds need in order to grow. To support this learning, the children planted their own seeds and are excited to watch them grow over the coming weeks.

Messages:

Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child brings a sun hat to school, has their water bottle and has sun cream applied before school. Sun cream that you apply once which lasts for 8 hours is ideal as then children don’t have to reapply throughout the day. If your child does need to bring sun cream into school, we will guide them to apply this independently.

Have a lovely weekend!
