Summer 1 Week 4

This week in Year 5, we have continued to work incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities. The children have shown great enthusiasm and teamwork throughout the week.

In Writing, we finished our audio diaries based on the book Cosmic. The children worked hard to write in role as different characters from the story, carefully thinking about how their characters would feel and react during key events.

In Maths, we have been focusing on reading coordinates and translation. The children practised accurately plotting coordinates in all four quadrants and describing the movement of shapes across a grid. They developed their reasoning skills by explaining how shapes had moved and identifying patterns when translating shapes horizontally and vertically. We were particularly impressed with the resilience shown when tackling some tricky reasoning challenges.

In Computing, we explored vector drawings and learnt how digital images can be created using shapes, lines and layers. The children had a go at making a penguin using the app and turning it into a parrot!

In PE, we continued our athletics unit with a focus on jumping techniques. The children practised improving their balance, coordination and power through a range of activities linked to long jump and standing jumps. We also enjoyed a one-off basketball lesson where the children developed their dribbling, passing and shooting skills while working together in small teams. The teamwork and encouragement shown during the lesson was wonderful to see.

In Science, we learnt about the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and discussed how this links to day and night, as well as the changing seasons. The children used models and diagrams to help them understand how the Earth moves in space and were able to explain some very complex scientific ideas clearly. Alongside this, we have also been practising for our upcoming space assembly. The children have been working extremely hard to learn their lines, songs and actions, and we are very excited to share our learning with you soon!
