This week, Year 2 have been busy exploring lots of exciting learning across the curriculum.
Mathematics
In Maths, we have been learning to tell the time using minutes past and minutes to the hour. The children have been using analogue clocks to count in 5-minute intervals and have practised reading and showing different times. They have shown great perseverance as they develop this important life skill.
Writing
In Writing, we began exploring the picture book Flotsam. The children used the front cover and title to make thoughtful predictions about what might happen in the story, looking carefully for clues and discussing their ideas with their peers. As we read the book, the children used their oracy skills to retell key events and created freeze frames to represent different scenes, helping them to deepen their understanding of the story.
Design and Technology
In DT, we started our new topic on mechanisms in moving toys. We learned about wheels and axles and investigated how they work in different vehicles. The children examined a range of existing toys from around school, identifying the wheels and axles and discussing how they help the toys move. This practical investigation gave the children a strong understanding of how axles work.
History
We also began our new History topic, exploring how the seaside has changed over time. The children looked carefully at photographs from the past and used their enquiry skills to ask questions about what they noticed. We discussed how things such as changing facilities, beach equipment and swimwear have changed over the years and considered what these changes can tell us about life in the past.
