Summer 1 Week 1
Following the Easter break, Year 1 have had an exciting and engaging start to the term as they were immersed in their new topic, The Great Fire of London, beginning with a memorable hook day.
The children explored when and where the fire took place and discovered why it spread so quickly. To bring their learning to life, they crafted houses from cardboard boxes and went outside to recreate a Stuart-era street. This hands-on experience helped them understand how easily the fire spread between tightly packed wooden buildings. They even attempted to put out a “fire” using only a small cup of water, which gave them a real sense of how challenging it was to control the blaze in 1666.
Year 1 have also enjoyed incorporating The Great Fire of London into other areas of the curriculum. In Art, they have been experimenting with colour mixing, creating a range of new shades while exploring their creativity. In English, the children have been introduced to poetry, where they have begun exploring rhythm, rhyme, and imaginative language through poems about the Great Fire. They also used atlases to locate London and develop their geographical understanding.
In Maths, Year 1 have been developing their skills by learning to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s.
It has been a fun, busy, and activity-filled week, and Year 1 have returned to school with enthusiasm and curiosity!
