This week we have been very busy continuing our learning in Summer 2.
Mathematics
In Maths, we have continued to develop our time-telling skills. The children have focused on telling the time in 5-minute intervals, both past and to the hour, using analogue clocks. They have also applied their understanding of there being 60 minutes in an hour to solve time-related problems, such as calculating how many minutes are in 2 hours. We explored the concept of 24 hours in a day and discussed how an analogue clock shows the same time twice each day – once in the morning (a.m.) and once in the afternoon/evening (p.m.).
Writing
In Writing, we continued our exploration of the story Flotsam. The children used a range of question openers, including who, what, when, where, why and how, to ask thoughtful questions about the story and its characters. This helped them to develop their understanding of the plot and encouraged them to think more deeply about the events and ideas presented in the book.
Design and Technology
In DT, we furthered our learning about mechanisms by exploring the difference between fixed axles and free axles. The children investigated how each mechanism works and then created simple mock-up vehicles to test their ideas. Through this practical activity, they observed how the wheels and axles move and gained a deeper understanding of how these mechanisms help vehicles to function.
