This week in Year 5, we have continued to work incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and have enjoyed another exciting week of learning. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly our fantastic trip to Magna, where the children explored a range of interactive exhibits linked to our new natural disasters topic. They learnt about powerful natural forces, experienced simulations and even had the opportunity to cool off in the splash park, making it a memorable day for everyone.
In writing, we have been developing our descriptive writing skills through our volcano topic. The children worked hard to write vivid descriptions of an erupting volcano, carefully selecting ambitious vocabulary and using expanded noun phrases to create powerful imagery for the reader. They thought deeply about the sights, sounds and feelings associated with a volcanic eruption and produced some impressive pieces of writing filled with exciting language.
In maths, we have been focusing on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. The children explored how digits move within a number when multiplying and dividing and practised applying this knowledge to a range of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving questions.
In topic, the children became engineers and artists as they designed, built and painted their own volcano models. They worked collaboratively to construct their volcanoes before carefully painting them to create realistic effects. This hands-on project helped deepen their understanding of volcanic structures and linked brilliantly to our wider learning about natural disasters. The finished volcanoes looked fantastic and the children were incredibly proud of their creations - getting ready to explode them next week!
In PE, we have continued developing our striking and fielding skills through rounders. The children practised accurate throwing, catching and batting techniques before applying these skills in small-sided games. It has been wonderful to see their teamwork, communication and sportsmanship continue to develop as they grow in confidence with the game.
