Summer 2 - Week 2
This week in Science, Year 1 have been learning all about the different parts of a plant and the important jobs they do. The children explored the functions of roots, stems, leaves and flowers, developing their understanding of how plants grow and survive. They discovered that roots anchor the plant firmly in the soil and absorb water and nutrients, while leaves use sunlight to help the plant make its own food. The children enjoyed identifying the different parts of plants and discussing why each part is essential for healthy growth.
In Geography, Year 1 have been developing their map skills. They learned that maps show places from a bird’s-eye view, also known as an aerial view, and explored how this perspective helps us understand the layout of an area. The children also recapped their knowledge of human and physical features, confidently identifying examples of both on maps. They enjoyed spotting features such as roads and buildings, which are human features, and rivers and hills, which are physical features.
In PSHE, Year 1 explored a variety of playground games from around the world. The children enjoyed learning how children in different countries play together and discovered that, although games may have different names or rules, they often encourage the same important skills such as teamwork, communication and cooperation. They had great fun trying out some of the games for themselves and discussing the similarities and differences between these games and those they play at school. This helped to develop their understanding of different cultures and the importance of inclusion and respect for others.
It has been a fantastic week of learning, with the children demonstrating great curiosity and enthusiasm.
