Where in the World is Egypt?

In our first lesson of learning about the Ancient Egyptians, we were looking at where Egypt is in the world. We used atlases to figure out that Egypt is in the continent of Africa, then discussed that it must be a hot place due to it being located close to the equator. We then looked at the terrain and noticed that most of Egypt is covered in sandy desert and discussed the difficulties that this must have caused for farming. We then used the atlas to locate the River Nile, the river which runs through the centre of Egypt. We talked about why this river was important to the Ancient Egyptians – to provide them with a water source and helped them to grow crops in the fertile land around the river. We then located the capital city: Cairo.

Afterwards, we looked at the human features of Egypt: The Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and a few others. We used iPads to then help us locate them and then we drew them in pictures onto our maps.
