Week 2

This week, the children have been continuing practising the routines and expectations of their new Year 1 classrooms alongside their oracy talk guidelines. 

In English, we started phonics in our new groups and learnt about adding labels to our independent work around the classroom. We launched our new handwriting scheme 'Letter Village' and the children have been impressing us with their dedication to improving their letter formation. 

In Maths, we started to think about place value to 10 and learned about how to write numbers as words and how to count on and find one more than a number. Writing numbers to 10 as words is a tricky concept as some of them are very tricky to spell so we will revisit this a lot over the year.

Im Science, we started to learn about the human body. We named lots of body parts and drew around people outside in chalk to label them. We also went hunting round the classroom for body part labels to stick on a human outline. 

We also started our new topic 'What was life like when grandparents were children' and the children learnt about the concept of the past and chronology. We talked about the question 'who came before me' building upon their learning in Reception and they showed us theit family timelines in different ways both inside and outside.
