Autumn 1 Week 5

This week in Year 2, we have been exploring fact families within 20 in Maths. The children have been learning about the relationship between three numbers and using ten frames to represent the whole and its parts. This hands-on approach helped them to understand the links between addition and subtraction. We also explored related facts, using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us solve number bonds to 100. Base 10 equipment supported the children in understanding how the ones become ten times bigger when moving from a one-digit number to its related two-digit number.

In Writing, we have been learning about present and past tense verbs. The children discovered that many past tense verbs end in -ed, but that this rule does not apply to every verb. We then used our new knowledge to construct sentences using a who, where and when structure, helping us to include more detail and bring our writing to life.

In History, we have been learning about significant women in the history of flight. We discovered facts about Amelia Earhart and Amy Johnson, two pioneering aviators who undertook remarkable long-distance solo flights. The children explored their achievements and discussed how these courageous women helped shape the history of aviation.

We also enjoyed a wonderful trip to the LBA Multiflight Café, where we sipped hot chocolate while watching planes take off and land. The children had some fantastic discussions about how flight has changed over the years, making links to our learning in History. Afterwards, we headed to the Chevin for some woodland exploration. During our woodland walk, the children observed the seasonal changes taking place around them, noticing how the deciduous trees had begun to change colour and their leaves had started to fall. It was a lovely opportunity to explore the natural environment and spot the signs of autumn!
