Feedback from KS2 and Y1 Open morning November 2016

Y5 parent

‘Interesting topic choice of people during World War 1.  The children could relate to them at that time.  Complex information which challenged the children to think about each sentence and what it meant.  It was fun!’

Y6 parent

‘It was good to see how well all the children work together.  The teachers make the lessons fun which makes the lessons a good and happy environment to learn in.’

Y5 parent

‘I have spent a lovely morning working on the class topic, learning lots about the women involved in WW1.  Great input from the children – all well behaved as usual!’

Y1 parent

‘Nice to see how the class work in different groups and practice spelling/writing (good ideas for homework practice!)’

Y1 parent

‘It was good to see the work in the classroom (wall displays etc).  It was good to see the children’s interaction with each other and with the teacher.  It was disappointing that the session finished prior to 11am as it had been advertised until 11am and I only arrived at 10:15 so mainly just saw snack and playtime.’

School response:  Sorry that your visit was cut short; we had forgotten that Year 1 playtime would cut into the time.  We will ensure that the times are advertised correctly next time.

‘I joined the lesson when the children were learning about instructions and how they’re presented.  The children enjoyed the lesson with exciting instructions and the class felt like a happy place to be.  I learnt a lot about imperative verbs and time connectives (I’m very impressed they knew all of this!) Thank you.’

Y6 parent

‘I enjoyed learning about estimates and impressed with the attention the children gave to tricky calculations. I can see the children are learning well and enjoyed the calm atmosphere of the classroom.’

Y5 parent

‘It was a very interesting topic about WW1.  All the children were actively taking part.  Enjoyed the open morning.  It was interesting how they learn so much in a short space of time.’

Y5 parent

‘Was the first time of being at an open morning so didn’t know what to expect.  It was a very good morning watching my child and classmates learning, very informative classwork to keep the children interested and engaged.’

Y6 grandparent

‘Very impressed with modern teaching skills.  Like the interaction in class between the pupils and teachers.  Very different to my schooling 50 years ago.’

Y6 parent

‘Very varied maths lesson which engaged the whole class.  Especially like how Miss Craig supported those who struggled with their answers in the group session.  She managed to get help from other pupils without making the child feel silly or unsupported.  Excellent humour used in reading lesson, children seemed to love the giggles in between Mr Chapman's lesson.’

Y4 parent

‘It was great to see how enthusiastic the children were and how the activities built up their excitement about writing their stories.  The teaching style kept them thinking all the time, developing their ideas.’

Y4 parent

‘Very interactive lesson.  All the children had on opportunity to participate.  Very engaging lesson.  I like the group works and how the children assist each other.  Overall great teaching.  Very interesting lesson.  I enjoyed my time in 4D.’

Y1 parent

‘Thank you for the invitation to visit my child at school.  The children were all very engaged in their activities and worked well together.  My child is very happy in his class and is enjoying working hard.  He enjoyed the visit as I did.  Thank you.’

Y6 parent

‘Lovely to see the children so focused and interested. Great teaching skills Miss B.’

Y1 parent

‘Loved letter sound/action participation from all the children.  Able to explain split digraph at 5 – 6 yrs old amazing.  The children were encouraged to think for themselves – love it.  Use of the count- down clock a great idea.  They all have confidence to speak when their name is called out, all willing to try and provide an answer.  My child had to complete the yellow challenge – putting the fire out in the bakery.’

Y1 parent

‘It was nice to see my child in his learning environment and get an understanding of how teaching is done in year 1 compared to his time in reception.’

Y6 parent

‘Thank you fantastic opportunity to spend time in the classroom, would recommend all parents to take advantage.  Also learnt more on the methods to support at home. Thank you Miss Craig.’

Y3 parent

‘Multiplication – White boards – all whiteboards should be squared.’

School response:  The whiteboards are used in a variety of lessons and for a variety of purposes so that is why we buy plain whiteboards. We will look at whether we can get them with squares on- thank you.

Y4 parent

‘Really enjoyed listening and watching the children engaging in the topic they were learning.’

Y6 parent

‘I found the experience very useful and illuminating.  It has helped me to understand the learning process more fully.  Thank you.’

Y5 parent

‘Enjoyed being sat in lesson.  The children interacted well. The children loved finding out interesting facts about their topics.’

Y3 parent

‘When I arrived the children were sticking in pictures into their books, my child did not have either picture and was a little confused.  My child is lacking in confidence and knew most of the answers but did not put his hand up.’

School response:  I have passed your feedback onto his teacher so she can make sure she addresses your concerns.  The teachers do use a variety of strategies to ensure all children contribute to the discussions and questions at different times.  This is done to make sure that those children who may be quieter or lack confidence do get opportunities to contribute.

Y3 parent

‘My child seemed a little behind in class.  He was doing well at his multiplication but was struggling with division.’

School response:  The teacher will identify children who have found aspects of the learning difficult and ensure they get more time to develop specific skills.  It always helps to practise these skills at home too.

Y3 parent

‘Miss Hellewell was relaxed and full of enthusiasm today. The class was well paced and the children were full of energy while being focused and engaged throughout.  Instructions were clear and clarified where necessary.  Examples were given and further learning and understanding was drawn at every opportunity.’

Y3 parent

‘Really good lesson.  Interesting to see how the teacher communicates the learning with the class.’

Y3 parent

‘Very impressed with the calm control of the children.  Good explanation of the methods of calculating the sums.  I liked how a child’s name was picked out of the cup to be asked a question.’

Y6 parent

‘Today the children were reading ‘Stellig’ I have had a fantastic morning learning with the children in year 6 and seeing how they have changed and grown since year 5 is fantastic.  They are all so amazing and their imagination is brilliant.’

‘This was the first session I have been able to attend and I really enjoyed it.  It was brilliant being able to see my child in her classroom environment and to see parts of her learning.  It is good that you are able to just blend in without being a big disruption and my child just carried on as if I wasn’t there!  Love the use of whiteboards – now I know why she likes hers so much at home.’

Y1 parent

‘Phonics lesson was great, lovely to see how the class works.  Great use of the polar bear book – feelings.’
