Spring 1 Week 3 20.1.23

Hello!

This week in Understanding the World, the children have been learning about rules and friendship. We have thought about what rules are and why they are important. We have discussed rules at home and at school. We have been thinking out being helpful and what sorts of things we can do to help at home and at school. Here is a link to the signing song ‘Can I help you?’ that we learned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ53UQCXJe8

We have also been thinking about what it means to be a good friend. We read the story Alfie Gives a Hand by Shirley Hughes and discussed the characters Bernard and Alfie. If you’d like to share this story again at home then here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv-DLgMO25g

We have learned about some stories that Jesus told which help us to think about how we should treat others. Here is a link to the video if you would like to share this again at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD-bTuVk2Tw

In maths this week we have been learning about mass and capacity. The children have been learning about mass through picking items up and comparing how heavy or light they are. They have been using the language heaviest, heavier, lightest and lighter to compare the weight and order items. They have been filling and emptying containers using language to compare how full a container is: empty, half-full and full. They have been problem solving in provision to see how many scoops of water, rice or sand is needed to fill a container.

Next week we will be learning about China: where it is and some features of this country and culture. We will be learning about the story of Chinese New Year: The Great Race. We will be learning about how Chinese New Year is celebrated and we will have lots of fun things to make and do to help us get immersed in this celebration.

In maths next week we will be exploring more about the representations of 6, 7 and 8 and will be playing more matching and sorting games to help us to see how these numbers can be made. We will be combining two groups up to the number 8.

This week we have been reading ‘Wheelie Girl’ by Miriam Latimer as one of our 5 Favourites for this half-term. The words we have concentrated on this week are breeze, scrambled, skilfully, pirouetting and eventually. We find these words in the story and discuss their meanings. The children are brilliant at spotting them each time we read our story and we try to use them in our daily activities as a way of introducing new ambitious vocabulary.

In our handwriting practice, we have worked on ‘around letters’ again this week with the c shape to start them all off. We recapped c, a and o and have worked on the formation of d and g. You will receive sheets for these sounds to practise at home.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning. It is lovely to see pictures and videos and also to hear about all the reading and writing practice you are doing at home. A little bit each day makes such a difference to your child’s progress. We also love to see posts about other experiences your child has such as learning to ride a bike, taking part in activities with family and friends, coming home and telling you all about what they have learnt in school, the list is endless! All of these experiences and activities help us to see your child’s learning over the course of the year as they are learning all the time, not just when they are at school.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
