Forces 09.11.23

Our new science topic: Forces!

Today in Year 5, we launched our new science topic: Forces. During this lesson, children explored how unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object. To explore this further, we investigated Isaac Newton's theory that the mass of an object affects the gravitational pull. To do so, we weighed a variety of objects including: a feather, a ball, a pen, Lego and paper and dropped them drop a height, measuring the time taken to reach the floor.

We discovered that:

The acceleration of the object equals the gravitational acceleration. The mass, size, and shape of the object are not a factor in describing the motion of the object. So all objects, regardless of size or shape or weight, free fall with the same acceleration.
