First days at school 25.09.20

Weekly Update 25.09.20

Hello!

Each week we will update you with a newsletter to inform you of the learning the children have been doing in Reception. This will help you to chat to your child about their week at school, as we are aware they will often say ‘Nothing!’ This will include learning in phonics, maths, understanding the world as well as other exciting learning opportunities we have had in the week. We will also inform you about what the children will be learning in the coming week.

In phonics, the children have been learning how to orally blend words through a game called Fred talk. Fred is our frog who can only speak through sounding out words, for example, ‘c-a-t cat’. This is in preparation for when we start to learn to read and write our first sounds next week which will be ‘m’, ‘a’, ‘s’ and ‘d’.  This week your child will come home with information on our phonics scheme, ‘Read, Write, inc’. In their book bags, they will have a leaflet explaining how the scheme works and how your child will learn letters and sounds. In addition to this, you will also receive your child’s first book, which will be wordless. There is a letter to accompany the book, which will explain how to use the wordless book when reading with your child.

In maths, we have been looking at patterns by noticing similarities and differences. We have been asking questions such as ‘What do you notice?’, ‘What things are similar?’ ‘What do you notice is different?’ The children have begun to count to and back from 10, daily on a number track. This will help the children to recognise numerals and count in stable order (consistently counting in order).

For understanding the world, we have focussed on feelings. The children have listened to stories related to feelings such as, The Smartest Giant in Town, Dogger and Ruby’s Worry. We have discussed how the characters felt and how we feel sometimes. The children were able to relate to the stories and gave some great examples from their own experiences.

Next week we will learn:

  • Sounds: ‘m’, ‘a’, ‘s’ and ‘d’.
  • Maths: We will begin learning about Number 1! What do you know about number 1? Where do you see 1? What items come in ones?
  • Understanding the World: What happens in Autumn?

Have a lovely weekend and we will see you Monday,

The Reception Team
