  • KS2 experience virtual reality delivered by Google's Tech Team

    Fri 30 Sep 2016
On Friday 30th September Farsley Springbank was visited by the tech team from Google who delivered a virtual reality day for all the children in KS2. "Google Expeditions" are collections, scenes or virtual reality panoramas — 360° photo spheres, 3D images and video — annotated with details, highlights, and questions for the children to discuss. The children explored various parts of the planet wearing headsets which immersed them under the sea, by the pyramids in Egypt and even stood them alongside the first men on the moon! It was an absolutely brilliant experience and a lesson that I'm sure the children will remember for a long time!  If you want to watch a short video clip which captured the children’s reactions, go to Class Pages/Creative ICT projects.
  • MacMillian Coffee Day

    Fri 30 Sep 2016
On Friday 30th September Year 6 ran the annual giant coffee morning/afternoon in order to raise money for Macmillan, a charity which does amazing work supporting people with cancer and their families throughout their treatment and beyond. The children spent time in the build up to the coffee morning researching the fantastic work that the charity does and used their new knowledge to make fact sheets and posters to put around our coffee day. The children worked tirelessly, not only providing first class service to their customers but also providing some great entertainment.  They have raised a fantastic £626.56 which will be donated to the charity in order to support their research and their work around the country.  A huge thank you to everyone who bought a cup of tea or coffee and a cake for supporting Year 6 on the day!
  • Year 5/6 football team

    Fri 23 Sep 2016

The Year 5 & 6 boys football team played at Priesthorpe school against Farsley Farfield and Calverley Parkside.

Springbank narrowly lost the first game 1-0 due to a very good goal from Farsley Farfield. Springbank started well with Frankie  forcing a great save from their keeper within the first minute. The game was evenly matched and the first half Owen made a great save to keep it 0-0 at half time.  In the second half, again, it was very tight, Theo was close to scoring, but in the next minute Farfield scored a goal and held onto their lead.

The second game ended in 2-2 draw with Calverley Parkside school. Both teams had chances to score; Owen was amazing in goal! Calverley went into the lead in the first half with George  equalising in the last second before half time. Springbank had been very unlucky not to score as Luca hit the bar with a screamer from over 20 yards out! In the second half both teams had chances with Calverley sneaking ahead. Then with 40 seconds to go quick thinking from a corner by Frankie led to a great cross from Oliver being smashed in by George to equalise.

The spirit from by the boys was excellent they never gave in and in the end were rewarded.

  • Online Safety focus days

    Fri 16 Sep 2016

The internet is potentially a wonderful resource but as we all know there are also risks associated with using the internet/social media and we have a well-developed curriculum aimed at teaching the children how to keep themselves safe online.  We held two focus days on Thursday 15th September and Friday 16th September. All children school took part in sessions which looked at a broad range of topics linked to how we stay safe on the internet. Topics included how to ensure we keep our passwords safe, how to interact with other internet users and why it is important to always speak to an adult if we are worried about anything we see or hear online. In our assembly at the end of the day, each class brought newly designed posters with them that reflected the SMART rules for online safety.  There is a section on our website (Parents/Online Safety and Digital Parenting) which contains lots of useful information about staying safe online.

  • The British Red Cross visit Year 6

    Fri 16 Sep 2016

Year 6 were visited by The British Red Cross to take part in some workshops with the charity. The basis of the learning was centred around refugees and immigration and looked at the different reasons for people moving countries globally. We discussed our position as a country and the responsibilities we have in terms of supporting people less fortunate than ourselves. Different activities allowed the children to delve more deeply into the meaning of terminology such as 'economic migrants' and proved really useful in terms of helping to overturn some misconceptions about why people claim refugee status. All-in-all, given the political events in our country over this past year, it was a very useful exercise in helping the Year 6s to understand some of the different terminology that they have been hearing on the news or in adult conversation. We are very grateful to the Red Cross for giving up their time to come and speak to our children.
