The Year 5 & 6 boys football team played at Priesthorpe school against Farsley Farfield and Calverley Parkside.
Springbank narrowly lost the first game 1-0 due to a very good goal from Farsley Farfield. Springbank started well with Frankie forcing a great save from their keeper within the first minute. The game was evenly matched and the first half Owen made a great save to keep it 0-0 at half time. In the second half, again, it was very tight, Theo was close to scoring, but in the next minute Farfield scored a goal and held onto their lead.
The second game ended in 2-2 draw with Calverley Parkside school. Both teams had chances to score; Owen was amazing in goal! Calverley went into the lead in the first half with George equalising in the last second before half time. Springbank had been very unlucky not to score as Luca hit the bar with a screamer from over 20 yards out! In the second half both teams had chances with Calverley sneaking ahead. Then with 40 seconds to go quick thinking from a corner by Frankie led to a great cross from Oliver being smashed in by George to equalise.
The spirit from by the boys was excellent they never gave in and in the end were rewarded.
The internet is potentially a wonderful resource but as we all know there are also risks associated with using the internet/social media and we have a well-developed curriculum aimed at teaching the children how to keep themselves safe online. We held two focus days on Thursday 15th September and Friday 16th September. All children school took part in sessions which looked at a broad range of topics linked to how we stay safe on the internet. Topics included how to ensure we keep our passwords safe, how to interact with other internet users and why it is important to always speak to an adult if we are worried about anything we see or hear online. In our assembly at the end of the day, each class brought newly designed posters with them that reflected the SMART rules for online safety. There is a section on our website (Parents/Online Safety and Digital Parenting) which contains lots of useful information about staying safe online.
Year 6 were visited by The British Red Cross to take part in some workshops with the charity. The basis of the learning was centred around refugees and immigration and looked at the different reasons for people moving countries globally. We discussed our position as a country and the responsibilities we have in terms of supporting people less fortunate than ourselves. Different activities allowed the children to delve more deeply into the meaning of terminology such as 'economic migrants' and proved really useful in terms of helping to overturn some misconceptions about why people claim refugee status. All-in-all, given the political events in our country over this past year, it was a very useful exercise in helping the Year 6s to understand some of the different terminology that they have been hearing on the news or in adult conversation. We are very grateful to the Red Cross for giving up their time to come and speak to our children.
