Air Resistance Experiment 03.07.19

Air resistance investigation

Today year 5 spent the whole day learning about forces! Following on from our first look at friction last week, the children learned about a particular type of friction: air resistance. We looked at examples of how air resistance might be used and thought about how it was used with parachutes to slow them down. To test this further, the children completed an investigation looking into how the size of a surface affects the amount of air resistance acting upon it. We used bin bags to create our own parachutes of different sizes. The fun part! We dropped our home made parachutes and measured the time it took for different sizes to reach the floor. We all agreed: the bigger the parachute, the slower it fell. We created a line graph to show this.
