Science - Materials 16-09-21

The children came back from lunch into a very messy classroom, with different materials and objects covering the tables. Their job was to identify the different materials. They spotted wood, glass, plastic, fabric, stone, paper, cardboard, rubber.

Then it was up to the children to sort the materials into two different groups according to different properties that they had. For example, some children sorted their materials into 'transparent and opaque' some sorted into 'hard and soft' etc. The children were encouraged to use the correct scientific vocabulary at all times where they were able and they did a great job of this. Then we played a game where the children had to discuss in their groups and hold an object based on different criteria. One of them was 'Hold up an item that is flexible and transparent'. The children chose things like bubble wrap, plastic rulers etc.
