At the start of this half-term, the children were given a problem to solve in DT. They needed to create a free-standing bridge that was stable and strong enough to cross from one table to another with at least a 30cm gap. It had to be suitable for a child from Reception to come and drive a toy car across it.
The children researched & then designed their bridges based on inspiration from Isambard Kingdom Brunel. They looked at structures with pillars, wide bases & buttresses and learnt how to strengthen paper by rolling, folding and joining it.
Finally the children made their bridges using their chosen materials & reflected on their work afterwards thinking about what went well and what they could improve on. The children from Reception came to test out the bridges too!
