Does shape affect water resistance?
Carrying on our science work today, Year 5 conducted yet another investigation into forces. The children discussed water resistance and noticed the similarities between that and air resistance. Drawing from this, we began to think about our parachute experiment last week and how their might be similarities between surface area and water resistance. We used play dough to form shapes. We used a flattened shape, a cone and a sphere of equal weights and then dropped them into water. We timed how long they took to reach the bottom of the measuring cylinder. We drew a table of results and began to think about how this links with the design of boats and shapes within nature, such as the nose of the shark.
