# Summer 2 Week 1 10.6.22

Hello!

We can’t believe this is the final half-term in reception for your children. They have been so wonderful and have made such fabulous progress. We have lots of lovely things to enjoy this half-term before we break up for summer, including our trip to Abbey House next week. There will also be a fun day in the last week of term where the children will take part in a range of games. We will also be hiring a big bouncy castle for the day!

This week we started our topic about mini-beasts. The children have absolutely loved learning about all different kinds of bugs. They have been investigating what an insect is and different parts of its body. In fact, you may like to sing this song at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxH7NBbL9JY which the children have loved singing. They might like to show you their groovy bug dancing too! We have been classifying mini-beasts and have been comparing them too. Throughout the week, the children have been finding lots of bugs in the reception garden and today we went bug hunting in the school garden. You might like to go for a hunt in your garden or local park. Look under rocks, on plants, on bark, in the soil and in the air to see which mini-beasts you can find. Can your child name the different parts of the bugs that they find? We have been using the language: head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, legs, wings, sting, shell.

In maths we have been learning about doubling. The children have enjoyed making doubling spells. You might like to play a game at home where you have a magic pot that doubles amounts. Put in 2 apples then talk about how many there will be if the amount doubles (is the same again). Pop two more in secretly and then see the magic happen! You can do this with a range of numbers: double 7 grapes, double 4 pennies, double 5 buttons and so on… The children also really enjoyed the story ‘Two of Everything’ about a magic doubling pot. Here is a link for you to enjoy this at home too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JML_7tsqlmU

Today reception and Key Stage 1 children enjoyed a Sports Gala run by ACE. The children have spent the day in a carousel of activities including dance, dodgeball, relays, parachute games and more. We have all had lots of fun taking part in this great event.

Next week we will be continuing our mini-beasts topic and the children will be doing craft activities and learning about how useful some mini-beasts can be. They will be finding out about mini-beasts around the world, some of which are huge!

In maths next week we will be learning about halving. Here are some books which link to halving and sharing which you might like to share (if you don’t have these books then you may be able to find them read on youtube):

The Doorbell Rang - Pat Hutchins

Bean Thirteen - Matthew McElligott

One Hungry Cat – Joanne Rocklin

Ness the Nurse – Nick Sharratt

As the forecast is looking nice and sunny, just a reminder to make sure you have applied sun cream to your child before school and that they have a sun hat and water.

Thank you again for your continued support. Please feel free to continue to send any photos or videos of your child’s activities at home, as they really help to build a full picture of your child’s progress or experiences.

Have a lovely weekend.
