Autumn 2 Week 1 5.11.21

Hello!

We hope you had a lovely half-term holiday.

The children have been working hard in their phonics groups this week. We have been recapping sounds previously taught and working on blending these sounds to make words. You will receive links on Tapestry for the sounds your child has been learning.

In maths this week we have been comparing amounts using the vocabulary more, fewer and the same. We have continued to explore the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and have been looking at one more and one less within these numbers. We have also been finding out about how the numbers 1, 2 and 3 are made up. For instance, 3 is made up of 3, 1 and 2 or 2 and 1 or 1, 1 and 1. 2 is made up of 2 or 1 and 1 and 1 is just 1. You might like to play a subitsing game at home. This is where you can see the amount without having to count. Put 3 objects on a tray under a tea towel. You could do 2 balls and a toy car. Can your child say how many, then can they group them eg 2 balls and 1 car. You could have 3 different objects or all the same. Try this with 2 and 1 objects too.

We have been singing a new song in maths which you might like to sing at home together: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/nursery-rhymes-when-goldilocks-went-to-the-house-of-the-bears/zbkrf4j

In Understanding the World, we have been learning about Diwali, the festival of light. We have learnt about the story of Rama and Sita. Here is a video we watched in class: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-studies-ks1-the-hindu-story-of-rama-and-sita/zdtmnrd

We have learnt about preparations for and the celebration of this festival. We have also thought about our own experience of festivals and how Diwali is similar to ways in which we celebrate. Here is a song about Diwali: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lets-go-club-diwali-song

The children have enjoyed making Deeva lamps, designing Henna and Rangoli patterns and role-playing Diwali celebrations in the home corner.

We also learnt about Bonfire Night and how to keep safe whilst having fun. The children enjoyed some fireworks and bonfire art work.

Next week we will be learning about shape, in particular circles and triangles. We will also be learning how to use positional language, such as on, under, in, between, in front and behind.

In Understanding the World, we will be learning about Remembrance Day.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and enjoy the fireworks!
