Hello!
This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds v, y, w, z and x.

y – https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/ptQWJ6Zl/pXUJuZht
w – https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/XN8oty1N/TeFf9OtH
z – https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/i1KBKx5T/0bByU2PY
x - https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/7gyydHL1/kr10Am9I
We have also continued to blend sounds to make words using the sound cards and magnet boards. Here is a video to watch with your child:

(Learning to blend at home – L2)
Your child could use their sound cards to make the words in the video. Can they show you how to do Fred Talk, Read the Word? (Point to each sound as you say it then run your finger along the sounds as you say the full word).
Thank you for all your support at home helping your child to practise their sounds and their handwriting.
Here are some Fred games you might like to play at home:

In maths we have been using the weighing scales to compare the weight of objects, using the vocabulary heavier and lighter. We have also been practising our counting skills and verbalising our mathematical ideas. The Gruffalo came to visit our classroom and he had some trouble counting accurately but with the children’s help, he got there in the end! The children came up with some tips to help the Gruffalo, including counting in the right order, counting one object at a time, moving the objects if needed to make sure we don’t count one more than once and that the last number we say when we count is how many altogether. These ideas all link in with the counting principles which are the foundations of developing a strong number sense. At home you can count things around the house. How many chairs have we got at the table? How many plates do we need? Can you lay the table and check how many?
In Understanding the World, we have been learning about the different seasons. Here is a link to the song we sang in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksGiLaIx39c We have learnt that we have 4 seasons and we have learnt some different features of the different seasons. We then looked more at the season of Autumn and talked about how it is getting dark earlier, that leaves are falling from the trees and changing colours, conkers are falling from the trees, animals are gathering food and storing it ready for the winter and that it is time to harvest foods, including pumpkins. When you are out and about this weekend can your child spot and talk about features of Autumn?
Next week in maths we will be comparing capacity and thinking about how much different containers can hold. You might like to get some different containers for bath time so that your child can explore this concept through their play. Can they use the vocabulary empty and full, nearly empty and nearly full? We will also be learning about the composition of number and how 2 is made of 1 ‘ and another 1’, and how 3 and 4 are made up, for instance 4 can be made from 3 and another 1. This link explains more about the composition of number: https://www.ncetm.org.uk/features/exploring-the-composition-of-number/
Next week we will be exploring the topic ‘Healthy Me’. We will learn about a balanced diet, how to keep healthy by being active, looking after our mind and also how to keep our body and teeth clean.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Reception team
