Autumn 2 Week 1 8.11.24

Hello!

We hope you had a lovely half-term holiday.

In maths this week we have been practising our counting skills. We have been deepening our understanding of 5 as a quantity, exploring ways to represent numbers to 5 using both their fingers and the Hungarian number pattern. These key representations help the children to understand the ‘fiveness’ of 5 and provide structures that will support later exploration of its composition and its relationship with other numbers. Here is a link to the Hungarian number frame which you can explore at

In Understanding the World, we have been learning about Diwali, the festival of light. We have learnt about the story of Rama and Sita. Here is a video we watched in class: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-studies-ks1-the-hindu-story-of-rama-and-sita/zdtmnrd  We have learnt about preparations for and the celebration of this festival. We have also thought about our own experience of festivals and how Diwali is similar to ways in which we celebrate. Here is a song about Diwali: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lets-go-club-diwali-song

The children have enjoyed designing rangoli patterns using materials inside and also with chalks outside. They have been role-playing Diwali celebrations in the home corner and have enjoyed retelling the story of Rama and Sita with the Diwali puppets. They have been making diva pots and have made firework prints in the painting area.

We have also learnt about Remembrance Day and its significance. The children learnt about what the poppy symbolises and why many people wear poppies in November.

Next week in maths we will be learning comparing the number of objects in two sets. We will be using the language more than, fewer than and an equal number. We will notice similarities and differences in the sets that we compare.

Next week is anti-bullying week. This is a whole school initiative and all classes will be taking part in activities based around this theme throughout the week. The message this year is ‘Being respectful’. We will be discussing different forms of bullying, including physical, verbal and leaving people out, how we can speak out about this and who our trusted adults are and how we can go to them for help. We will talk about how we can show respect to others in they way we behave, using kind hands and feet, listening ears and kind words.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
