Year 6 began the week with a DT focus day where we introduced our engineering based project where the children were tasked with designing and building a prototype of a new piece of adventure playground equipment. We began the day by exploring what engineering was and looking at Yorkshire-born John Smeaton - widely considered the founder of civil engineering in Britain. Then we looked at shapes and structures within frames and how we could strengthen them using triangular supports. After this, we researched current products on the market and used this to inform our final designs. Once we had chosen our design, we began building our model prototype using the knowledge gained from our earlier learning.
