Spring 1 Week 4 31.1.25

Hello!

This week we have been learning about China. We located China on the world map, discussed where in the world it is and compared the size of China to England. We also found out some interesting facts about the features of this country and Chinese culture. We have also been learning about the story of Chinese New Year: The Great Race. The children enjoyed finding out which year they had been born in and the animals that represent each year. We have also found out how Chinese New Year is celebrated; the children have acted this out in their play and have made some beautiful Chinese dragons in the craft area.

In maths the children have been learning how to compare measurements; including height, length and time. The children have been using language such as short, long, tall, longer, shorter, tallest, and shortest to compare sizes. In our number lessons, we have been learning about ‘5 and a bit’, this is the skill of looking for 5 within a number, for example in 6, there is a 5 and 1. The children have been using a 5 dice pattern to identify 5 and more in numbers 6 and 7. At home you could think of different numbers that have 5 and more in them, you could make 5 die patterns with loose parts such as past or buttons to show 5 and a bit.

Next week we will be learning about rules and friendship in our R.E unit. The children will discuss the rules we have in school and at home and the reasons for having rules. They will also think about what characteristics make a good friend and how we can help other people.

In Maths next week we will be comparing quantities using fewer than. More than and equal. The children will be noticing when quantities are equal or unequal and will be thinking about how they can manipulate the groups to make them equal.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning. It is lovely to see pictures and videos and also to hear about all the reading and writing practice you are doing at home. A little bit each day makes such a difference to your child’s progress. We also love to see posts about other experiences your child has such as learning to ride a bike, taking part in activities with family and friends, coming home and telling you all about what they have learnt in school, the list is endless! All of these experiences and activities help us to see your child’s learning over the course of the year as they are learning all the time, not just when they are at school.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.
