In our science lesson this week we explored the importance of maintaining good hygiene and the impact of poor hygiene through a series of experiments.
Experiment 1: Glitter Germs:
We began by using glitter to visualise how germs can spread around our classroom. One child had glitter on their hands then touched various surfaces. This activity helped us see how easily germs can be transferred from one place to another, emphasising the importance of washing our hands regularly.
Experiment 2: Bread Observations:
Next, we set up an experiment with three pieces of bread to observe over the next two weeks:
Piece 1: Untouched
Piece 2: Touched by everyone with unwashed hands
Piece 3: Touched by one child with washed hands
We made predictions about what might happen to each piece of bread and discussed why those changes may occur.
Experiment 3: Pepper and Soap:
Finally, we conducted the pepper and soap experiment. We sprinkled pepper (representing germs) on water and observed what happened when we stuck our finger in the water. Then we added soap to our finger and observed what happened - the soap caused the pepper to move away, demonstrating how effective soap is at removing germs from our hands.
Through these experiments the children learned about the importance of good hygiene practices, preventing the spread of germs and keeping ourselves healthy.
