Autumn 2 Week 3 22.11.24

Hello!

In maths this week we have been learning about the concept of a whole and how a whole can be made up of parts. We have been learning this mathematical idea through recognising a whole object and identifying its parts, such as a whole jigsaw and a piece of jigsaw. The children have looked at 3 and recognised that its parts could be a 1 and 1 and 1 or 2 and 1 by using blocks to represent their understanding. At home you could discuss what objects they know that have parts such as a toy car, a Lego construction or a magnetic construction kit. You could also find different ways of arranging collections of items (no more than 5), such as buttons, coins, by splitting them into parts.

This week in Understanding the World we have been learning about The Arctic! The children have been learning about where The Arctic region is, what the climate is like and who lives there. We have enjoyed finding out that The Arctic region is one of the coldest places on Earth and that there are large amounts of ice. The children have found out about the wildlife that lives there and noticed that animals have fur which helps them to be camouflaged to protect themselves from predators. We have been creating some fantastic Arctic animal artwork and using non-fiction books to find out facts.

Next week we will learn more about the Arctic, comparing the Arctic to where we live and finding out about how climate change is affecting the Arctic and the animals that live there.

In maths next week we will be learning about the composition of numbers within 4 and 5. We will continue our learning on whole and parts by noticing numbers within numbers. Through using practical resources the children will see that a whole number can be made up of smaller parts, for example 4 can be a 2 and a 2, or 3 and 1, or 1 and 1 and 1 and 1.

We were very proud of Reception this week on their first trip outside of school! Their behaviour when walking to the Library and back was impeccable and they showed interest and curiosity in the Library. It was a lovely experience for us!

We hope you have a great weekend,
The Reception team
