Autumn 1 Week 8 25.10.24

Hello!

This week the children have been working hard in their phonics groups. Look out for the phonics links on Tapestry which you can use at home.

In maths we have been learning how to recognise and create AB patterns, such as circle, square, circle, square… You might like to have a go at creating some AB patterns of your own. You could take a photo of your pattern and post this on Tapestry to share with the class. We have been subitising using our ears instead of our eyes! We have been listening to 1, 2 or 3 sounds and identifying how many. We have also been investigating the number 4 and making different 4 patterns with counters and other resources.

In Understanding the World we have been exploring equality through a range of stories and discussions. Here is a song we have been singing this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbHQ-OS9_G0

We have talked about how we are the same and how we are different and about what makes us special. We have also thought about how we might like different or the same things as other people and we read the book You Choose to help us to choose the things we like. We have thought about how families can all be very different from each other using the story ‘Families, families, families’ by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang. We read the story ‘Look Up’ as part of Black History Month and learnt about Mae Jemison, who was the first Black woman to go into space. We talked about the sorts of things we would like to do when we grow up.

After the holidays in maths we will be using our counting skills to recognise sets of 5. The children will practise counting to 5 using 1:1 correspondence (labelling each item with a number) and cardinality (knowing the last item that has been assigned a number is how many there are in the group. The children will know that 5 fingers represents 5 and will learn to use a 5 die frame to recognise 5.

In Understanding the World will be learning about Diwali. We will learn about the story of Diwali, how people prepare for and celebrate Diwali and we will compare Diwali celebrations with other festivals we know about. We will also be learning about Remembrance Day and its significance.

Thank you for your support this half-term. The children have made a great start to their reception year. We hope you all have a well-earned break this week and we look forward to seeing you again next half-term for lots more fun and of course the run up to Christmas!

Take care,

The Reception Team
