This week in maths
This week in Reception, the children explored capacity by filling different sized containers with scoops of rice and comparing which held more or less. In maths, our focus was on understanding how the number 5 can be made in different ways. Using the song 5 Little Speckled Frogs, fingers and practical resources such as Numicon, cubes and counters. The children learned to show and explain how 5 can be partitioned into different pairs, using the sentence “5 is made from ___ and ___.”
At home, you can support this learning by singing the song together, counting everyday objects up to 5 and encouraging your child to find different ways to make 5 using toys, fingers or small items.
This week in Understanding the World
This week in Literacy, the children focused on The Little Red Hen. They retold the story using a story map and identified key words to create a word bank. The children then learned about the four main parts of the story - plant the corn, cut the corn, bake the bread and eat the bread. The children had a go at writing parts of the story. In PSHE, we have discussed safer strangers, helping the children understand who they can trust and how to keep themselves safe.
Next week…
Next week in class, we will be continuing our maths learning by comparing capacity and helping the children develop a clearer understanding of the numbers 5, 6 and 7. The children will learn to recognise these numbers using dice patterns and practical resources. The children will explore what happens when one more is added to a group. Through songs, stories and hands-on activities, they will practise counting accurately, spotting patterns and explaining how they know how many objects there are.
In PSHE and RE, the children will be learning about rules and relationships. They will talk about why we need rules at home/ at school and how this helps to keep everyone safe and happy. The children will also explore what it means to be helpful and how they can help others in school/home. Through stories such as Alfie Gives a Hand and Bible stories, they will discuss what makes a good friend and how we can care for others.
Reminders:
Reception may take part in outdoor learning throughout the week so please ensure your child comes to school with waterproof clothing and a bag of spare clothes.
