Hello!
This week in phonics we have learnt the sounds b, f, e, l and h This week we have begun to blend sounds to read words, we have used the sounds m, a, s, d and t to read the words: mat, sat, mad, sad and dad. You can make these words at home and use Fred Talk to say and blend the sounds together to read the words.
Here are the videos for the sounds we have been learning:

In maths, we have been learning how to recognise and create AB patterns, such as circle, square, circle, square… You might like to have a go at creating some AB patterns of your own. You could take a photo of your pattern and post this on Tapestry to share with the class. We have been subitising using our ears instead of our eyes! We have been listening to 1, 2 or 3 sounds and identifying how many. We have also been investigating the number 4 and making different 4 patterns with counters and other resources.
This week we have launched our first ever ‘Talk 4 Writing’ topic linked to the book ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’. The idea of Talk 4 writing is to orally retell the story until they are really familiar with the story. This will eventually, over the course of the year, help the children structure and write stories of their own using the vocabulary from the stories they have experienced. At this point of the year our focus is on oral retelling of stories. The children have read the book each day this week and they have come up with actions to go with each part of the story. They have been rehearsing the story orally as a group. At home you could encourage your child to retell the story with actions. (This would make a great video to send in to share with their friends). It might help to show them the pages of the story to prompt them about the different parts of the story.
Next week, we will be learning new sounds and continuing learning to blend sounds to make words. Please continue to practise the sounds in your pack at home. You might like to practise ‘speedy sounds’ where you show the cards in quick succession whilst your child says each sound. You might like to play ‘hide the sounds’ where you hide them around the room and your child has to find them and tell you what they are as they find them. You could make some matching pair cards with the sounds and see if you can get a pair!
Next week in maths, we will be focusing on comparing quantities. The children will explore sets of objects and learn to describe them using the language of “more than” and “fewer than”. Through games and practical activities, they will practise looking carefully at groups of items to decide which has more or fewer, sometimes by ‘just seeing’ and sometimes by matching objects. They will also have opportunities to notice differences in size, shape or colour while keeping their attention on the number of items. This work will help build their understanding of comparing amounts, an important skill that will support later learning in ordering numbers and estimating.
Next week in Understanding the World we will be learning about and comparing the 4 seasons, thinking in particular about the signs of Autumn.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Reception team
