Autumn 1 Week 7

This week, the children have been finishing off their topic 'What was life like when grandparents were children?' and all contributed to a huge piece of work in our class books where they showed off everything they had learnt about the 1960s. They were very confident explaining who Neil Armstrong was and what he did, how people listened to music and what the differences were in the technology. We rounded off the topic with a walk around the local area. The children had a map from 1957 and one from the present day and they were looking for the changes in the last 60-70 years. They noticed that Farsley has fewer fields, more houses and more people now than in the past.

In English, we are continuing to teach the children new sounds (Miss Wood has emailed out links to videos suitable for your child today). We have also been practising how to spell red words he, we, me, she , be, to, do, I, the and we have done some writing all about one of our focus texts - Winnie the Witch.

In Maths, The children have been getting to grips with writing addition calculations and have worked on number bonds to 10, systematic number bonds (doing it with a pattern) and addition fact families.

A fact family might be

2+3=5

3+2=5

5=2+3

5=3+2

In music, we've continued to explore our voices, including our "thinking voice"! The children have been exploring the beat in music, and they have used a drum to keep the beat, marched, chopped, and even tapped the magic wand in our song"Star Light, Star Bright".

Dodge Ball Competition:

This week Year 1 took part in an intra school dodge ball competition. All of the children competed in their Team groups (Lions, Panthers, Jaguars and Tigers). The children had great fun and tried really hard with their throwing and dodging skills. They also showed good sportsman-ship and cheered each other on. They are very excited to find out which team wins over all.  The overall winning team will be announced once all year groups have run their competitions too.
