Hello!
This week we began working in phonics groups. You will receive a Tapestry update each week with links to the sounds your child has covered and any other relevant information and videos.
Please continue to recap sounds and blend sounds to make words at home. This really does make a huge difference to how well your child retains the sounds. This can be done by having sounds up on the fridge or bedroom wall and playing games where your child spots a sound. Maybe they could throw a bean bag and try to hit a sound or you could hide one away – can your child figure out the missing sound? Can you say some words like Fred Frog m..a..t – can your child find the right cards to make the word then do Fred Talk, Read the Word or even have a go writing the word?
In maths we have learned about capacity and we came up with ideas of things that could fit in different sized containers and how much it would take to fill them up. We have also learned about the composition of number and how 2 is made of 1 ‘ and another 1’, and how 3 and 4 are made up, for instance 4 can be made from 3 and another 1. We watched the following Numberblocks episodes to support this learning. You might like to watch them again at home:

In Understanding the World, we have been learning about keeping healthy in our topic ‘Healthy Me’. We have learned about a balanced diet and how it is important to have different types of foods in our diet for different reasons, such as helping our bones to be strong or giving us energy. We have learned about different types of exercise and why it is important to exercise. We have learned about keeping our mind healthy by eating well, resting, exercising and doing things we enjoy. We have also learned about being hygienic, keeping our bodies clean and about brushing our teeth.
The children also learned about consent using the story Don't Hug Doug. We talked about what consent means and how it is absolutely okay to say 'no thank you' if someone asks for a hug. We talked about different ways of showing love and care such as a high five, a wave, a pat on the shoulder or holding a hand.
Next week is equalities week. We will think about what makes us unique and what makes us different. We will exploring the idea of diversity and how being different is wonderful and makes our world a really fun and interesting place. In addition to this we will read the story Look Up as part of Black History Month. We will find out more about the inspirational Mae Jemison who was the first Black woman to go into space. We will also think about how families can all be very different from each other using the story ‘Families, families, families’ by Suzanne Lang and Max Lang.
Next week in maths we will be learning to subitise amounts to 4 to help us embed our understanding of 3 and 4. The children will be identifying when a quantity is changed. We will also be using positional language to describe patterns of 4. We will also be making patterns of 4. You might like to make 4 in different arrangements at home. You could do this with 4 objects on a tray or the table. Can you arrange your objects? How have you arranged them? There are 3 at the top and 1 at the bottom…there are 2 at one side and 2 at the other side…there is 1 in each corner. We will also be looking at patterns and making AB patterns with different resources.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Reception team
