Autumn 1 Week 7
In maths this week, Y6 have been learning the BODMAS rule (order of operations) and applying it to problem solving. We have also been looking at estimation and the children are definitely improving in mental arithmetic when applying this method of maths – well done, Y6 and keep up with the times tables too!
Our class novel, Private Peaceful is going down a storm and the children’s feedback has been great - we're really enjoying it! We have studied reading texts involving WWII, as this will be our next term’s topic, and this week we looked at the Blitz. We have also been looking at the spelling rule for words ending in ‘cial’ and applying this in our writing. Y6 are very proud of their descriptive writing about a battle field – linked to our WWI topic - and hopefully we will generate some AI pictures to show their writing in action.
The children have been continuing with their solo keyboard challenge, pushing themselves to learn and perform tricky pieces on the keyboard. Some children have mastered "Ode to Joy" and "O When the Saints go marching in" and some of them have reached the point of playing with two hands together, with "Shotgun" and "Amazing Grace".
This week, both classes had a trip to Eden Camp, a museum that transported us back to wartime Britain to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a time gone by! Set in the original buildings and grounds of a Prisoner of War Camp, each reconstructed scene revealed the realities of day-to-day life on the Home Front, Front Line and as a POW. The children were brilliant as always and it was great to learn history outside of the classroom.
